**The Official Nokia Lumia 800 Thread***

All it needs is some sexy hardware (this device) and marketing. It will sell. It won't touch or overtake Apple and Google overnight, but it will get there.

Why will it get there? I'm not saying it wont but I don't see why/how MS will manage to pull back a large market share? People are more likely to buy what they've had before, so apart from the small numbers (proportionally) that change they're all fighting over new buyers into the smartphone market, but because they're last to market (really, really, last) their advertising has to counter the social advertising of friends and family who already have smartphones, because chances are those friends and family have an iphone or android handset.

If you went into a major phone shop over the weekend, you would understand why.

The amount of people trying to have a tinker with this phone was immense. The marketing Nokia and Microsoft will get the attention of lot's of people, and the "prettyness" will do the rest. Nokia + Microsoft is a perfect combination IMO, and it's going to do wonders for both companies in the long run.

People said the exact same thing with the xBox was coming to the market.

The Droid was what got the US into Android handsets, the Milestone didn't have anything like that effect anywhere else. The HTC Magic and then the HTC Desire were the breakthrough handsets over here, especially the latter.

I know the milestone wasnt significant here but i was just calling it a milestone so people would know what phone it was

Agreed. Looking back at my previous post, that's only a small part of what was happening. There were three "pods" and all of them were busy with punters. I can really see this phone taking off. Quite a lot of the punters were asking about NFC though and seemed to be put off when they were told the phone didn't have it.

In my opinion based on reading various forums / blog sites this couldn't be further from the truth.

Since the launch of Mango (which happened without a hitch) lots of people are backing WP7 to make the breakthrough. Add the release of new devices from HTC and Samsung plus the Nokia release and i would say things are gaining a huge amount of traction.

Perhaps..I'm really hoping it has/does. I was going by friends and relatives. Mind you none of them are the slight bit interested in an iPhone either...

Been asked before and I haven't found anywhere yet...try later this week, launch date isn't till 16th. Somebody may now prove me wrong however...

I agree on that front - none of my mates have one and none of them probably know what WP7 is. But to be honest most of them don't know what Android really is - a couple of them thought they had the same phone because it was an Android - one was Samsung and the other was HTC!

I think that's part of the trick now - getting people to understand that they need to choose an OS first and a phone second.

I think when Windows 8 launches and becomes available on tablets it will really boost WP further. Plus the Xbox is getting updated with a metro style UI so the future integration for these products looks great.

Yeah but my friends do get what android is, and do know about an iPhone - just they all don't want to pay that much for a contract. Soooo - at £30 these don't have a cat in hells chance of selling to my mates. However, they think the "new nokia" looks nice...

The box that Engadget's review sample shipped in featured a red handset on the front :D

Nice, I think a nice shade of grey would go down well too. Black and white phones are so boring now :D Lets hope everyone else takes notice!

True, it's very desirable bit of kit and just what they needed.
(He's wrong about a few things like resolution and power consumption though, the iPhone 4S drain is a software bug, a newer duel core SoC will improve power consumption for everyday basic tasks. MS are ramping up towards the high end as we speak :))

Have you actually got a good reason as to why you think people won't buy these other than the fact you're desperate for Nokia to go under and Microsoft to fail?

Nope...that's just my mates! I want it to do well, but don't know if it will. I haven't played with one yet either, so am just saying what they've said....

Robbo, I'm all for Nokia and Wp7 doing well, really, just fail to see that they've done enough so far to convince the general public of my age. I'm 40+ you see, so that could be part of the problem. I'm also of the opinion it's too little too late, but willing to be proven wrong. Problem is that nothing anyone has said so far has changed my mind about nokia and wp7. Maybe seeing one in the flesh and playing will change that, maybe not...

Ohh and I can't see Nokia failing totally...but maybe becoming part of MS or just making dumbphones or something else completely

exactly. I'm subscribed to the thread as it does interest me. I'm also interested in both sides, and android and ios. Already have a few android devices and understand their limitations and son has an ipod which doesn't do anything for me. WP7 might be an excellent option for him though, as it ties in with his xbox. So, keeping my eyes and ears open to see what's happening. The reviews I've read are still roughly 60/40 on it being great, so when I get a chance to see one i'll be there in a flash...but as I said, I'm not convinced yet

Without sounding horrible... I'm not sure you are the sort of person this phone is aimed at, along with most smartphones tbh...

The "problem" at the moment (off of these forums) is that people don't really care about the OS. They know iOS and Apple but other than that most couldn't give a damn whether they were using Android or any other OS. People buy an HTC or a Samsung Galaxy most of the time. Most non techy folk aren't really tied into an ecosystem yet, they haven't had smartphones long enough to really be so. Most, like my sister probably haven't even paid for an app on Android... While MS are a little later than they could have been they are certainly not too late for most people. Yes there will be people tied into iOS or Android due to the money spent but for most it's not going to make a difference.

With the right advertising (ie people finding out about it and it not being slagged off by sales staff) I can see a lot of the less techy people switching from Android...
