Gaming - no benefit to switching over.

I moved the games to the end of our performance benchmarks, if only because the charts are so boring. It’s hardly a surprise, but there’s almost zero difference between any of these platforms with just a single GeForce GTX 580 installed.

Who in their right mind would ever have considered one of these for gaming? I imagine most of these will be used in workstations, simply because of the massive processing power and potential for silly amounts of memory. Although that said maybe the flight sim'ers can find a use for it...

Oh come on, as soon as they're out I bet many make the switch over. Any extra performance is good. Wouldn't be surprised if all the reviews rave about them too once released for real. Smoother gameplay, will last for more years than your current CPU before requiring upgrading, etc etc, better ability to multitask, better performance with the new forthcoming graphics cards, I can imagine the reviews now :). Who uses their PC just for gaming also?

Considering the price I don't think future proofing is a particularly valid point when I could buy a 2600K and upgrade to an ivy bridge i7 for the rumoured price of a 3960x. But your right in that lots of enthusiasts will probably buy them, but that doesn't make them a good purchase ;)

I haven't seen the prices yet, and there's alway something round the corner that'll be the same price for more performance although I guess Ivybridge is relatively close. The 580 Nvidia is in the same situation now, new products not far off that should give much better performance for the same price. Will be interesting to see what the performance difference will be between SB-E on 2011 and IVY on 1155, probably not much either. However I guess those with a compatible 1155 mobo can save the purchase of a new board if they get the IVY 1155 instead of SB-E 2011.

Must admit I've been tempted to try the 2700K recently but I think I'll wait and jump to the new technology 2011 SB-E from my old 1156 i5-750 tech :)

also that graph does nothing realistically, because it shows a normal everyday gaming session that is bottlenecked by the graphics card, there is no difference between old 'Bloomfield' processors or 'Sandy Bridge' processors or even 'Bulldozer' processors in that sort of an environment, they all produce more or less carbon copies of each others frame-rate. ;)
