The most influential gaming man of all time is...

I'd also throw a nod in the direction of David Braben.

Indeed - Elite influenced a huge swath of games even those not directly space based.

I would put him and Carmack joint position, while IMO Carmack has done more directly Braben IMO has ignited the imagination of many developers and gamers indirectly influencing a lot more than can accuratly be attributed. Even John Romero has had more influence than Steve Jobs.

Call me cynical, but I think he was probably given this accolade because he's dead. And quite recently dead.

Complete nonsense.

Ok so i could essentially now say, well they're wrong....and that Dennis Ritchie is the most influential...he may have had nothing to do with games, but going by the warped way in which these peoples minds work surely the creator of unix and C programming languages and who essentially but indirectly gave steve jobs his wealth (apple software is all based on what he created after all) That he is infact the most influential.

.... but obviously he isn't, and they're completely wrong.

I don't like the fact Steve Jobs is revered as this great man whereas when someone FAR greater and FAR more influential dies at the same time you don't hear about it anywhere except tucked away in the depths of a forum.

As this is (currently) in the PC Gaming section and not in the rabidly insecure Apple section may I be the first to say. 'I didn't care about Steve Jobs in life, and care even less now he's dead.' The hysteria over this man is laughable.

His stroke of genius was producing overpriced white plastic gadgets with a nice logo and somehow making them cool. Nothing else.

Pity votes because he died.
Anyone with an ounce of sense knows that his influence on gaming is non-existent, any apple fanboy who see's it will cream their pants and yell "Yay Steve! You were truly an influence on many industries and it's amazing to see your hard work recognised. Anyone who doesn't think so is just a hater and should just leave."

i kinda see what they mean - stuff like the iphone brought casual gaming to the masses and was encouraged for all ages, but i wouldnt have said he was most influential personally :)

The Wii did that way before the iPhone though. Even going by what you said, he still shouldn't be anywhere near the top of that list.

By the logic that Steve Jobs is the most influential person in gaming surely Bill Gates is the most influential person in gaming. Without the PC how would games be made? Maybe even Tommy Flowers or Charles Babbage?

I think I could name at least 50 more influential people for gaming, hell, I'd even put myself before Steve Jobs. It's even fairly well known he thought games were a waste of time!
