Any word on when the new ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z revision will be available? I have just bought a 2700k and I'm looking for a new mobo. Just wondering if I should hang off and wait for the PCI-E 3.0 rev or jump in and go for the current model... I know it'll be a while before any 3.0 gpu's launch but I'm thinking towards the future

I had this same dillema last week.
There's no official statements only rumors of December.

You should be made aware however that none of the first Pci-e 3.0 cards will be anywhere close to maxing the bandwidth of pci-e 2.0 nevermind 3.0.

I wanted the rig running for Skyrim and took the plunge.

I'm thinking much the same about Skyrim :D I'd really like another Asus board. I have a full tower case but I'm thinking size of the Gene-Z might help free up space for my water loop. However saying that, if the EXTREME-Z was slightly cheaper I would be tempted to go for that instead..

I have a couple of GTX480's in SLi. One thing I was wondering is the 8x 8x SLi likely to have much of a negative effect over a board that'll support 16x 16x? The general consensus seems to be no but I don't know if that's specific to certain graphics cards :confused:

Just to let you know, you can't run PCI-E 3.0 graphic card on Intel i7-2700, you need a 22nm processor with controller for this PCI-E 3.0.

When PCI-E 3.0 cards are available they will be backwards compatible with and run fine on PCI-E 2.0 motherboards and current i3, i5 and i7 cpu's.
Running them in this configuration they will run at PCI-E 2.0.

You only need Gen 3.0 boards and ivybridge cpu's to run them at PCI-E 3.0.

This is a moot point as the first generations of PCI-3.0 cards won't even be able to saturate PCI-E 2.0's bandwidth, nevermind PCI-E 3.0.

Yes, that is true but still you need a future INTEL processor to run card using PCI-e 3.0! So you need Graphic, Processor and Motherboard PCI-e 3.0 compatible. If you have Asus Maximus IV GENE-Z , you still can attach Graphic Card with PCI-e 3.0.
 
I've just made the leap and ordered one of these to go with a 2500k I have on order. Should I have waited? From peoples posts here it seems that I'll probably be OK as I'm only after a "good" setup rather than ultra performance

Waited for what? the Gen 3 version of this board?

If yes, there's no performance difference between the boards with current hardware.
There's no "ultra performance" to be gained from a gen 3 of this motherboard, it's the same as what you get now.

The current version will support Ivybridge cpu's and run PCI-E 3.0 gfx cards at PCI-E 2.0 speeds.

As stated previously in the thread the first PCI-E 3.0 cards wont use the total bandwith available on PCI-E 2.0, so for the first generations PCI-E 3.0 is nothing more than a marketing gimmick.

So in summary, there's no downside to buying now rather than waiting.

Thanks for the clarification. It's been nearly 4 years since I last upgraded my PC and I'm considerably out of touch these days. I was just a concerned that I'd chosen a bad time to upgrade.

I can't wait for the parts to start arriving so I can start putting it together
