i5 2500k really that good?

I currently have a phenom 955 at 3.8ghz. I need to get a new motherboard because the one i got has x4 mode PCIE slot. So my xfire is playing up in some games. But ive been thinking since the bulldozer flopped. Should i just go Intel and get the i5 2500k?

It would be going with 2x 5850's and a eyefinity setup.

Also what are your thoughts on the Foxconn Quantum Force Flaming Blade GTI Intel X58 mobo on overclockers? Its really cheap but that might be because its trash. Im on a budget you see;)
 
If you can afford it, get the 2500k, beats bulldozer by a lot, beats a 990x in some things and offers the best bang for buck, over clocks well, runs cool, it's a beast of a CPU.
 
Well I just swapped my 955 @ 3.4 for an i5 @ 4.5... Theoretically I think that's about a 30-40% gain.

Unfortunately I've not had a lot of real comparative time yet, although World of Warcraft does ironically seem to benefit more than Battlefield 3 :D
 
Yes it really is that good.
I recently Built a 2500k rig for my old fella for his WOW addiction, and I still can't get over how fast and responsive the machine is. Not to mention the ease of overclock with a cheap 212 cooler.
Highly recommended.

What's the point in saying it beats a 990x in some things? The 2500k can't touch the 990x unless 4 threads or less are used, in which case you might as well be saying the 2500k beats the i5 750. Yeah, a 2500k at 100% load can beat a 990x at ~33% load, go figure.

A 2500k can beat a dual X5690 rig in some things, too. Does that make it a better chip?

In gaming, what's going to be better, the 990x with its 12 threads, or the 2500k?. The 2500k in the vast majority of games....

Obviously for the purpose of the 990x (Massive number crunching etc) it's better than the 2500k, if you needed it for a server, you're liking to go for the Xeon's etc

Don't get me wrong, I'm certainly not arguing that a 2500k won't be better for gaming. I'm just pointing out how silly it is to say a 2500k beats in 990x in "some things". Because that 990x is going to be performing like an i5 750 in anything that uses ~4 threads. It's common sense and people really only pit their chips against the 990x (especially in programs that don't fully utilize it) to make them feel better about their purchase.

You never hear people say "my 2500k is much faster than my i5 750". It's always "my £170 2500k can beat a £800 chip11!!!11!!1".

Anything that utilises the 12 threads of the 990x would have it spanking a 2500k all over.
However, the 2700k versus the 980x is a bit more interesting, 8 threads versus 12.

problem is hardly nobody uses those processors, so it makes the argument abit null and void to be fair! :D
 
I see no one has cottened onto the fact that the op has not fully done heir homework and asking what an x58(1366) motherboard(the foxcon) is like when its not compatible with the cpu(i2500k) they're asking about.

matluk the i2500k uses the skt1155 motherboard, the foxcon you mention is a skt1366(old i7) motherboard.

there are are a couple that are~£80 but don't do xfire, well they say xfire supported but the 2nd x16 pci-e is actually x4 and that seriously effects the performance.
 
yeah the 2500K is like the proverbial dogs nads...there isn't much they don't do well, they don't use much power, they don't generate much heat, they have unrivalled IPC and clock like crazy, so pretty good processors all and all. ;)

Would have been better to say my 2500k is better than a 990x for 90% of the tasks a gamer/home user does. :)
