2600k + motherboard advice

Upto you if you want the spend the extra money on the H60 or H70, but AIO's aren't very impressive, if the pump dies it's pretty useless.

I'd take that VenomousX any day of the week.

i just want a cooler that will allow a 2600k to be oc'ed to the max without heat issues.

My 2600k was a dog mate, It only needed 1.28v for 4.4 but anything above required nearly 1.4v which took heat to the max.

See here for my stability tests on the 2700k:
4_6_stable.jpg

Looks much better now - on the same custom water cooling with EXCESSIVE stability burn in testing

2700k @ 4.6Ghz - 1.28v (stock 4.6 OC profile setting)
DDR1866 @ 1.65v - 9-11-9-24/1T (stock profile setting)

Tests run were Prime 96 blend for 12hrs + and IBT Maximum on 8 threads (x50). Can't get more stable than that!
I can probably go much higher but cba for now lol

btw - there not much in it between the best air coolers and the AIO systems like Corsair H50 tbh - your choice mate.

2600k will clock to 4.6GHZ easily.

Well my 2600k bought on saturday had problems getting to 4.6 on reasonable voltage - it needed over 1.4v to be stable which is too much.

Looks like intel have done one on us gareth and rebranded the higher binned 2600k's as 2700k's. If your aim is 4.6 ghz I'd recommend getting a 2700k just to be on the safe side ;)

obviously this doesn't apply to the older 2600k's as intel won't have been scrutinising them as they needed to for the 2700k cpu addition.

Depends on your definition of reasonable voltage.
I'd say 1.4v for reasonable at 4.6GHZ.

But yeah, I understand you can get some duff chips, mine's pretty crappy, my original did 4.8GHZ at 1.35v.

I have ordered a:

Intel Core i7-2700K 3.50GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - OEM

Asrock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard

Thermalright Venomous X Black Edition CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775/LGA1156/LGA1155/LGA1366/AM2/AM3)

Which i will receive tomorrow.. ;)

What are these so called annoying settings on the asrock? Curious as i couldn't be bothered with with a manual OC so just went with 4.4, would like to get it higher though doing manual as i'm iffy on auto OC.

I thought you were AMD through and through Gareth? Thought you were going to try out Bulldozer? Looks like some great kit you've ordered anyway!

yes i've always been with amd but i already tried out Bulldozer and i posted my thoughts and results in AMD Bulldozer Finally! ,

but i sent it back because it was really crap even in 8 threaded apps

Ah, didn't realise you had actually tried one out. That bad eh? Shame as there were high hopes for it. Hope you are happier with the 2600k.

I'm still thinking about going to a 2500k but the prices just keep creeping up so i'm thinking stick with what I have for the time being.
