Some people think it's pefectly legal to run lights on a bike.

so whats the point in the road agencies laying the white lines at the side of the road for cyclists to ride within ?

I jump the lights on my bike all the time, it's my right. Car users are just killing the planet.

I am a cyclist and I sometimes jump a red.

Reason being? No traffic, no pedestrians at the lights, if there are either, I am happy to stop and wait. It's not like everybody only crosses the road at a set of lights and waits for them.

Ah, the weekly we hate cyclists debate.

Why can't we agree that all users of roads, cycle lanes and shared pavement areas have a minority that abuse the rules.

Yes, some cyclists do jump red lights but then so do some car drivers. Don't we always see warnings about car drivers jumping level crossings too? Car drivers parking in cycle lanes and pedestrians walking in marked cycle areas of pavements displays a lack of awareness or an ignorance.

That's just it, if it was I doubt people would have such a large problem.

Cars do cross red lights and level crossings, but you need to get the correct relative amounts. Just saying everyone commits some offences doesn't portray the situation correctly.

I could go right now to the busy junction outside and count at least 10x more cyclists breaking the rules even with their far fewer numbers.

I thought riding side by side was against the law?

Also I remember hearing that flashing lights on a bike are illegal, I thought it had to be constantly on? can someone confirm?

Flashing lights are permitted but it is recommended that cyclists who are riding in areas without street lighting use a steady front lamp.

You should:
- never ride more than two abreast, and ride in single file on narrow or busy roads and when riding round bends

Drivers in the most part are selfish and moronic and think they are above the rules on the road
Corrected for you.

Am both a driver and a cyclist btw. There are many, many, many more moronic drivers than cyclists :)

Seems to be more common in the cities. In London almost all cyclists jump red lights and I often wonder if a good proportion of them actually think they're allowed to. I was taught the rules of the road as a child before I was allowed onto busy(ish) roads but I think a lot of people these days have never bothered to read up on it.
I used to do a lot of seroius cycling once and I had sympathy for them in busy cities, I'm from Dublin and now live in London, but cyclists have developed into a selfish breed who seem to own a bike only in order to flout traffic laws knowing they'll never get caught due to their lack number plate. I bet they'd drag us through the courts though if any of us drivers knocked them off!
Finally.... Last week I saw a late 20s woman cyclist in London with a small child on a kiddy seat jump three red lights in succession, shook her head when she had to brake to let a car turn right in front of her (who was on green) and then ride straight through a crowd of people on a pedestrian crossing ...through a fourth red light. Poor little kid oblivious to her mothers actions :(

It isn't even close in terms of numbers. As a pedestrian I am less worried about cars even though they would kill me. Cars can be predicted whilst cyclists could do absolutely anything.

As a driver cyclists are much much more frequently reckless.

But we don't have the numbers :)
I see lots of cars jump on my early morning rides, and on every journey there's always been at least one car speeding up on sight of amber, just to join the queue further ahead.

All depends on the area you're in. I hardly see many cyclists around my area riding on pavements, or recklessly on the road.

I do see them jump the lights, or sort of filter through whilst the other cars are going past.

Do you actually believe that Sundance? Or you're more than likely just trying to pee people off. Go to WH Smith's or somewhere, buy a copy of the Highway Code, read the section for cyclists and come back to me...

I've reached a sufficiently old-manish age where I sometimes tut at other cyclists who go through red lights :o Main problem I think is that you don't need a licence or any training at all to cycle around town. This isn't a problem for most people (who have learnt to drive) but it's a particular problem here for foreign students who don't know the rules of the road. (either that or in their country a red light simply means go with a little caution - I'm looking at the French here :D)

TBH even if we did have segregated lanes cyclists would still jump lights. Only way is to educate them (and fine the jumpers :D)

Cyclists are a pain anywhere!! They should be made to pay road tax, have insurance and MOT for bikes. Abide by the highway code (Like car drivers!!lol).

It amazes me when a cyclist wizzes in and out of the traffic, weaving from lane to lane, undertaking, going through red lights, mounting pavements etc and they gets peeved when a motorist does something they dont like!! Bunch of utter monkies they are!

I always stop them from undertaking me!!

Hmmm I wonder if that's because there are many, many, many more drivers than cyclists on the roads

:)
