Hi seems my GF is in a bit of a problem, attending work today she was greeted with a few sheets of paper of which contained Facebook Status relating to work,

e.g;

'Oh night shift :('
'Not looking forward to bloody work'
'Cant wait to finish and get into bed'

Little comments like the above, nothing serious and discriminating against the employer and workers.

Now they have said she faces getting the sack? I don't quite know what to think. Surly some sort of privacy laws come into place here? Somebody has gone behind her back printed them off and give them to managment.

Anybody here know of similar situations and possible consequences?

:)

Does she states who her employers are on her page?

Clearly her profile isn't hidden and/or has her bosses as her friends.

Top tip, don't put anything work related on Facebook, ever. It isn't LinkedIn.

Facebook isn't private, if it was, they wouldn't have been able to print out her comments. Saying that though, I would hardly say that those are sackable comments. Maybe just someone stirring it, I'm assuming these were just left on her desk to find?

Whilst I completely agree with the whole never mention work thing, they are completely generic thoughts that I guarantee 99.9% of the working population have or will have at some point. None of it is specific, none of it names the company, none of it is aimed at an individual, its just generic 'I dont like going to work' and lets face it, most people would rather stay in bed. Thinking that you prefer to stay in bed rather than get up for work isn't a sackable offence.

As long as she wasn't on Facebook at work updating her status with those comments then I don't see why she would get sacked. Even if she was posting at work, the maximum they could do is give her a verbal warning or possibly a disciplinary.

We actually had an email round pointing out to the whole Facebook thing, partly about confidentiality, but also about defamation.

Just be careful and better not mention it at all and if you have your work place listed, remove it.

She came home in tears, I told her the comments she has made are just normal day to day thoughts, like you mention to friends or the like, she just so happened to post them on Facebook and some petty workmate is playing the work worm.

Yeah she has her work listed and her profile is only viewable to friends, so somebody apart from managment has done a bit of digging for some reason. Some from 2 years ago.

She has posted some from her mobile while at work so that does not sound good. She is a Carer in a nursing home so not like its MI5 posting confidential details!!

Doubt they can do much legally, but it's not wise doing that.

Tell her to drop the running commentary on her life. Chances are nobody is interested anyway and it only gets her in trouble.

Check to see if the company has some sort of social media or internet usage policy which should cover what the company sees as appropriate and inappropriate things to say.

I doubt she would get sacked for the sort of comments listed above (unless they have been posted during work time, but that is somewhat different).

Ultimately, it is important to remember that Facebook is not private. Never put anything on facebook that you don't want people to see, or that you wouldn't be prepared to stand by and publish publically in the real world. Same applies to forums and the like as well.

This, I can't see how those comments could get you the sack at all.
They are generic and not bad or dissing the company.

In future lock Facebook down as much as possible.

using facebook while at work.

i bet the status updates are time stamped aswell so they will know if it was a break/dinner time.

maybe they just want an excuse to get rid of her though
