I agree Reaper 392, intel i5 2500k is the way really for a good system at a decent price, but again it really depends on the budget his friend is willing to spend. I speced him an intel solution and an AMD one with future proofing on the AMD side I hope when they fix that Bulldozer mess and then that could be a good upgrade in the future. Also as reaper said forget SLI or crossfire for now, get 1 decent graphics card.

You have my specs above for the intel setup and AMD setup now mate also there is windowed versions of them cases too by Bitfenix, which are decent low priced cases.

I'm not sure if you're serious with that comment but you can use an Nvidia GPU with an AMD CPU.

Doesnt matter if you use Nvidi/AMD GPU But AMD is a good combination with it.
