Which device for recording audio?

I'm after a bit of advice for my dad. He is in his 70s and partially blind, and his passion in life is folk music.

He has asked me what device he could use to record at the folk nights he attends at a few pubs, but I have no idea about these things.

Like I said, he is pretty bad with his eyes so he would need something relatively easy to use.

Not sure about price.

Hmm, not sure that would go down too well, the whole 'bootleg' recording thing.

Better off asking the bands if they have CDs - many do these days.

That more than likely sums up the type of artists he goes to watch and who stops fans from recording concerts now with the influx of HD on smartphones?
 
An iPhone would do a good job, if not my friend uses one of these, he does the odd folk session down the pub but mainly rockabilly and it works great...
