D.

We've been here before this isn't true. Alcoholism is about how alcohol is broken down in your system, a non-alcoholic breaks down alcohol differently to an alcoholic, an alcoholic can go without a drink however when they do have a drink they don't stop until they pass out, this could be days. The trick as said before is not having that one drink in the first place which is why they go to AA as society in this country seems to be centred around alcohol and the meetings give them chance to be with like minded people when the urge to go and have a drink which is normal becomes too strong.

I can go to the pub and have 2 beers and come home happy, an alcoholic could never do that. Look it up, it's all to do with the body breaking down alcohol.

I don't agree with that criteria, there are different levels of alcoholism, see my post a few up, you don't have to drink yourself into oblivion to be considered an alcoholic, as long as there is a dependency then that is alcoholism imo.

This thread has just made me go to the offy and buy a crate of beer lmao. I better log of now before i get banned for posting vulgar stuff. I'll have to wake up early to see what damage i do on facebook :p

Why do people in this thread think that a person with a alcohol problem drinks to excess and does it everyday, that is not the case.

Alcohol problem != alcoholic.

I've rather more personal experience with alcoholism than I'd wish on anyone. The alcoholics I've known struggle to go a day without a drink, and usually drink to excess once they've started. It's the compulsion to drink regardless of context or circumstance that distinguishes an alcoholic from someone who just drinks too much, or "just" has a problem with alcohol.

Fair enough there are different levels, however unless you are causing problems at that point to either your own life or that of people around you then there isn't a problem, it's pretty much the norm for a high percentage of the population of this country, I personally prefer to refer to someone as an alcoholic when it starts to have a negative effect on themselves and people around them, but point taken. :)

So i just bought my crate of Carling, first sip is excellent (even with Carling). I'm a bit annoyed by the lowering of alcohol in beer. First it was Carlsberg from 4 to 3.8 (this was at least 3~4 years ago though, then it was stella, 5.2 to 5, and now carling has gone from 4.1 to 4 :(

Rule of business though i guess, they either charge more or give you less. It's annoying though because i only bought ccarling because of the 2.5% more alcohol% over fosters, except it doesn't have that anymore :(

Quite simply because the vast majority don’t have any knowledge or experience of alcoholics. It’s really not that surprising.

The thing is I have had loads of experience.
During my courses I had to spend frontline time in different centres so I can only go by the stories of alcoholics who came into the centres and the (ex) alcoholics who were doing my course.
Yes Mollymoo, some do it everyday and some might go weeks before touching a drink but the important thing is that every day the second type are fighting not to drink.
The first type are like Rab C Nesbitt and the second type are like Peter & Carla on Coronation Street.
Obviously some people may have experience of other types but they are the only 2 I came across.

Bang on. It's also progressive, so you might start at the weekends, but it can spill over to weeknights and further over time. It always feels normal and it happens slowly. If you're lucky you get off the escalator before you get too far down. no one can diagnose you bit yourself op. If its a problem, its a problem. If you can have two drinks and go to sleep without thinking about the rest in the fridge, then you're probably okay. If not, pop into a meeting and have a chat.

I've never seen Led Zepplin.

Oooh, and somebody with 71 posts saying that!! - must be a returnee.

Nah, i've read 51% of your posts starting with the first in 2002. You're an intersting character. I plan to read every post made by all the regulars within the next month or two so i get a really good feel for the forum.

If you were alcoholic you'd be doing it every day and you would NEED it.

You have clearly contradicted yourself in those two posts.

Probably best if you don't give out any more advice.

I stand corrected and apologise, it should have been:
If you were alcoholic you'd be WANTING TO DO it every day and you would NEED it.

This is twice I've been corrected for this very same thing in two different threads because the vast majority of alcoholics who came through the door were the first type and I tend to forget the second type.

Since August you've read around 16,000 of my posts?
Pull the other one.
Still a very strange question to ask for a person with only 71 posts unless you're a returnee or somebody from another forum.
Hmmm.

I will never understand why people need to drink that amount, i will have a drink occasionally if out to dinner, but i have been feeding my baby the last 18 months so no alcohol at all, and i can't say i'm going to rush out any time soon for one, drinks evian :p

I think the point to remember here is that its better to send a binge drinker to AA or a treatment centre than it is to tell an alcoholic not to seek help. I've met alcoholics who drank all amounts and frequencies, but the common thread was what happened when they took the first drink. I don't see how these threads are treated differently to any other medical thread. If you think you have a problem, seek qualified help.

I'm probably an alcoholic, i have 4 cans a night and way more a the weekend, but there isn't a chance of me stopping. I like it, what's the problem. I'll just die from liver failure, will be better than slowly watching the world as i know it collapse around me.

Didnt we have this argument a while back what consists of the term "alcoholic"

Do you not have a hobby, exercise, more to life than 4 cans a night
