MSI Twin Frozr II VS Asus (560Ti)

The MSI has a much beefier cooler (more heatpipes and fins) and lower temperatures than the Asus, but the Asus is still better than a reference design.

Used to be you were going 6950 Crossfire, 6870 Crossfire.

Going for a sidegrade now?

Overclocked or not, the 560 isn't going to give you any substantial visual difference than your 6950.

Waste of money imo.

MSI>Asus pretty much all the time

the gigabyte OC cards are worth a look at.

If you already have a 6950, the 560 is a waste of money :)

I wish i stated this earlier lol, I'm speaking on behalf of my brother who has:

AMD Phenom x4 965 Black edition @3.90Ghz
Corsair 4gb 1666mhz Ram
Asus mobo
Ati Radeon 5750
1TB Seagate Barrucuda 7200RPM

So yeah, he is playing Battlefield on the lowest settings and wants to aim for High at a constant 40-60 Fps. He had his eye on the MSI OC version and was going to place the order tonight but OC stripped it from the website. I'm aware that the MSI has a far superior cooling system but performance wise can we expect the ASUS to match it?

I made a picture comparison of the asus and msi heatsinks back when these cards were launched, but cant post it as im browsing on my phone. The MSI cooler is vastly better.

Somewhere else has it for £180 (on offer for £177 until monday morning)

If he's been happy with his 5750, then I'd recommend sticking to ATI, so the same place has the 2Gb 6950 Twin Frozr III Power Edition/OC for £201 on offer as well.

He has been happy with ATI but people were speaking of the MSI being inbetween the 6950 and 6970, which in that case made it a no brainer to go towards Nvidia due to it's price tag.

Well the 560Ti and 6950 are very close. The 6950 is slightly better at stock input games but the 560 ocs like a beast.

As I said, the gigabyte cards are also excellent. They're more targeted at silence though.

The EVGA DS cards are also really good. They look amazing aswell :pi take it your bros PSU is up to it?

It's an OCZ Slipstream 650W ?

Should be plenty.

In the heaven thread using CrossFire, -2237 points for me, but max51 gets - 2709, compare that with TonyCattoor's fastest 570 sli result at- 2361.

Then look at the fastest 560 sli result(although not many have been added), jklc's - 1865.

I think you can safely say the 6950 can overclock like a champ.:p

At the end of the day they both perform about the same in games, I'm just pointing out that the 6950's can overclock to the same levels as the 560's.

I would try and get a 2Gb 560/6950 though if it's within his price range, especially if it's only £6 extra than a 1Gb and if he's keeping the card for a couple of years.

What about the 'new' 560Ti due out soon?:)

Well it kinda depends on when and what price range they are coming in at because my brother wants to spend below £200.

In response to Tommy, i've let him know that and now he wants the 2gb version, why exactly are they more future proof? i know they are but i'd like to know details as to why?

Can i get your steam ID too Tommy ? :)

There's a 1 month old MSI 6950 OC Twin FrozR III Power Edition with Dirt3 & Deus Ex for £185 in the members market if that's any use to him.

They are more future proof due to the size of vram, regardless whether 1GB's 'enough' at 1080p.

Games are scaleable but it's not using vram just for the sake of it, it's filling the frame buffer to stream data quicker or enabling higher IQ, it can make the difference between using 2xAA and 4xAA.

AA might not be needed on a 1080p monitor but if you were to game on a 37"+ 1080p TV then trust me you will want it.

DX11 games are starting to eat vram- DAII, Crysis 2, Shogun 2, BF3, the new Metro and others will come.

If you want to play a game and if it can use the extra vram then it's there, whether it's poorly coded/ported the PC or not if you want to play the game it could make the difference too.

For the sake of ~£20, I'd definately have it than not especially if you only upgrade every 2-3 years.

I won't pretend to understand most of that but i think i get what you mean. Would you accept my steam invite? He's set on 2gb's of VRam now and wants the R6950 Twin Frozr III ideally.
