My mum is considering getting another car, her last one was written off (Saxo) 3 years back by a foreign man who forgot what side we drive on in blighty. Criteria is:

- £3K Budget
- Small and easy to manouver
- Economical to run, service and repair should issues arise
- As safe by modern standards as possible with budget
- 50K miles or less ideally, but my view is less of a problem with good history
- Warranty would be nice and full history

I'm thinking Ka, Fiesta, Fox, Polo, Clio type thing, but give me some pointers as I have not real knowledge on cars of this nature. Ta.

I was thinking Fiesta was a good shout, Yaris too perhaps as it will no doubt be reliable as will the Micra one suspects. I liked the Ka, fun to drive if crappy engine and poor interior but this is for mum so I want light steering, good brakes, lightness all round really and good visibility and ideally not too fast has she was the source of the Housey gene for speed and she is a bit too rapid for my liking, even at 72.

Fiesta MK6 - I had a 2006 one for two years and it never went wrong. All it asked for was a new set of tyres - and an MOT + Service every year.

It was a great car untill someone skipped a give way pull right in front of me and wrote it off last week!

However as I'm back looking at new car I've discovered that the Fiesta's have held there price incredibly. I mean I think they have inflated.

I paid 4k for my 55' (2006) (pre-facelift) Ford Fiesta 1.25, Black, 5dr with 33k miles, in 2009. Two and a half years later they are still pretty much commanding the same price.

Have a look at Focus's - they appear to be better value for money. Everyone selling there big cars and jumping on the small car ship has inflated the prices.

I hate to agree with Raymond :D but the Yaris is, as far as baby cars go, brilliant. A friend of mine's wife has one and I have quite a bit of experience with it. It's spacious, reliable, cheap to run, quite refined for a car of its nature, and 88bhp from the 1.3L engine is rather good too. It's that or a Fiesta IMHO.

How did you think it drove, nice enough?

Hahaha. funnily enough I have driven one Fox.

It's OK, if we're talking about the Mk 5.

The pedals are a bit small for my liking and the interior is a bit cheapy on the earlier pre-facelift models.

The Mk 6 however is a lovely car, it was the car I learnt most of my driving in, feels much more solid and feels bigger, although Housey your mum may not like that because it feels noticeably wider than the Mk 5.

I've also had a quick drive in a Mk 3 Clio it was a gutless 1.2 petrol and in my opinion it was a terrible car to be in. The interior is awful and overall was worse than the Fiesta (might be due to the engine).

The pedals were squeaky and the handbrake took a bit of getting used to.

However it was quite comfortable and I liked the slanted dials hehe. :p

Best think for your mum to do Housey is to make a shortlist and then test drive a few.
