so i've just got my nice new evo 3d and im very happy with it, but.....

being such the techie i am i've been reading up on rooting and how it can improve my phone with things like customs roms and in particular overclocking and beats hack.
so i was just wondering about these things which i know all you smart people will be able to answer :D

1: does it void my insurance on the phone that i pay/can they even tell?
2: what are the main benefits? like does it speed up my phone? increase battery life?
3: is it really worth it? what if my shiney new phone goes wrong? am i screwed?
4: and finally how easy is it to brick the phone/ go wrong?

It can be useful, but you aren't going to gain an awful lot by doing it on an EVO 3D, so I wouldn't bother.

It just gives you access to extra apps that can do things like back up the entire phone, and gives you more control over what things are running.

As long as you can follow instructions you shouldn't have much to worry about though.

might be worth reading how easy/hard to brick they are. The Galaxy S and S2 I've rooted and reflashed have been practically impossible to brick. The Arc I did.. well that felt pretty close to being dead and needed a lot of fixing when a flash went wonky.

Well it's probably worth doing then if you're after those two things, just make sure you follow the instructions carefully.

You can flash a stock ROM (etc) back on and so forth for warranty purposes if you need to as well. That should be fine.

What's the Beats Hack?

I rooted my Galaxy Note last night and installed Chainfire3D. The rooting process was actually surprisingly easy, it's the quickest most straight forward firmware "hack" I've ever done. I love messing around with custom firmwares, so most gadgets and things I get, I'll tend to do it just because I can, so my PS3, iPhone PSP and Wii all have custom firmwares on them.

Ah I see.

What I would love is to be able to use the Galaxy Nexus boot screen on my Galaxy Note. Reckon that'll be a possibility?

I'll probably end up using this phone as my main music player once Micro SDXCs come down in price. I'd absolutely love a 64 or 128GB SD card in my Note.

There's confirmation going around that the Note as well as the SII and a load of other Micro SD phones are running perfectly fine with Micro SDXCs, the only caveat is that they don't work on exFAT, but are fine when formatted to FAT32.

i will probably root my phone tomorrow then, is it easy to flash custom roms? and flash back?
and what about insurance, does it void that or do they have no way of telling?

It does, but if you restore it they would never know. Just remember to take out the SD card too.

No way at all really. When I was using my iPhone 3G, I had it jail broken. I restored it back to factory settings when I needed to take it into the Apple store for them to swap it over. The guy I was dealing with as well seemingly assumed I had jailbroken it as well, as I was asking him what version firmware the replacement would be coming with.

I think at the time the highest jailbreakable firmware was 3.1.2, so I asked him if it came with that, and he quizzed me on why, I just told him "I Really like 3.1.2" while my friend was sniggering next to me over it. I definitely think the "genius" was well aware of why I was asking, but it wasn't any problem as I got a replacement straight away (dead pixels and bubbles and dust under the screen).

I firmly believe the whole "your warranty is void of you do * with software" is literally only there to cover them for people who don't know what they're doing, bricking their phones. Well maybe not in the case of Apple as we all know how they feel about jailbreaking when they took it upon themselves to declare it as illegal just because they say so. :P

But yeah, it should be no problem at all.
