Battlefield 3 tips & tricks

Cheers for the headsup rjk, i was hitting just over 1200mb on a pair of sli 470's, dropped use down to just over 1100mb, as they say in tesco, every little helps.:)

used the same trick I did for Crysis2 when the DX11&Tex packs came out
its an old benchmarking trick i used when vista came out.
nobody needs 3GB cards at all, just that all game EXE files should have disable desktop composition built into them.
if i am honest, i totally forgot about it when BF3 came out until a clanmate reminded me

now stop reading my posts and start upping your settings! :p

a genuinely useful thread idea, ruined by pointless replies.

here's a tip

go to wherever you have BF3 Installed
mine is: D:\Origin\Origin Games\Battlefield 3 for example

then select the 'bf3.exe'

right click on the exe and go to the compatibility tab

then tick the box that says

"Disable Desktop Composition"

press apply

this will disable windows aero when you open the game and frees up vram

I game at 2560X1600 on 480SLI and sat at 1500MB Vram usage all the time

doing this trick frees up 3-400 mb vram meaning the computer is not bottlenecked

maxxed out, BF3 runs at 1200MB vram usage at the very most.

hope that helps some of you :)

Yeap I do this for every game, I also disable visual themes as well.

Got any tips for flying jets :( I seem to get in one, cant shoot anything with the guns and then get shot show by rockets! Ive got no change of leveling to get rockets :(

Well if you take what 9/10 people do as the correct way to fly jets first you want to TK people who are waiting for one then jump in and fly off. At this point you have several options, you could crash on takeoff just for the lolz... you could use it as a taxi to get to a cap point... or you could just die in 5 seconds flat then go back and tk the folk waiting for it to respawn.

On a serious note, go for heli's over enemy jets at the start to level up quicker. They tend to have more human cargo so you get M-M-M-M-MULTI KILL and moar points. :) Unlock rockets and profit!

Not sure where i read this...will link if i can find it...but sure i saw mention that they (DICE) weren't happy about the way you unlock stuff in jets. i.e new pilots die far too quickly, and were gonna change the system. Someone suggested flares etc to come as standard to get you started.

Found it...heres the link....http://bf3blog.com/2011/10/battlefield-3-jets-getting-improved-in-new-patch/

As for tips one ploy I am using just now is that i am trying to level up my recon a bit but I am a fairly useless sniper so waited till I unlocked the ump and using that as my primary, prob obvious to some but I figured I would mention it.

Kudos to you! Just applied this and there is a clear improvement in performance :)

OK, new suggestion. Go play a 32 man Rush game, something like Capsian. Most people seem completely focussed on attacking/defending the MCOMs and don't bother with anti air, so the only real opponent you'll have is the other jet. This'll give you good, practically undisturbed 1v1 air combat practice. For some reason my MAV drew more stinger fire than my A10.

rjkoneill, that's exactly the kind of thing this thread needs! Nice tip, I've just done it :)

One way to get fast points I found out is to get the EOD bot and go behind a friendly vehicle (tank is better) that is getting shot at and just constantly repair it. You get constant 20 point bonuses. I racked up 3000 in no time.

EDIT: Just played BF3 and it seems a lot smoother and much more responsive. VRAM max was 1151MB :)

Make a text file in the root BF3 folder called "user.cfg" and inside type the following two lines;

RenderDevice.ForceRenderAheadLimit 1
RenderDevice.TrippleBufferingEnable 0

Save, close, and play helps with any stuttering.. Though I didn't notice it myself

Can someone confirm whether this helps? I hardly get any stuttering on ultra, just the odd stutter when I'm in the middle of a very heavy scene and I turn quickly.

Search servers by keyword practice and find a flying map thats empty. 64m conquest is suicide until you know what you are doing. You will likely be shot down by AA guns before you even find something to try kill.

When exiting armor with a turret point the turret in the direction you want to get out, handy for repairing.

If you are sniping do not use the light attachment (and to a lesser extent the Laser) It makes u stand out like a sore thumb. The amount of kills i get from shooting out the lights is insane.

Unless u are very pro and tend to top 64 man conquest servers the quickest way to get points is TDM, quick rounds and high kill counts, I also get a hell of a lot more ribbons e.t.c this way. Also TDM is a better place to try out new weapons and scopes e.t.c. as you don't have to run half a map to find something to shoot.

Drop an Anti tank mine behind a stationary tank before shooting it with your SMAW for more damage.

Use Q

Don't forget to drop health packs and ammo. On crazy maps like 64 man conquest metro don't spam rpgs looking for the odd lucky kill drop ammo or run around reviving (my favourite) for more points.

When facing up tank against tank don't just stop and hope u shoot them quicker than they shoot you turn your tank 90 degrees and 'rock' back and forth to try dodge incoming missiles.

That is all I can think of right now!

Oddly Aero only uses around 100mb vram on my machine, when it switches to Win7 basic it drops to 39mb. I wouldn't normally bother for that little gain but every little counts for Bf3.
