New Car (Used) - 1500 Miles Done - Both front inner tyres gone - Photos Added (High Res)

Morning,

I am hopeful some people could share some views on this, let me give some background.

Approximately 1 month ago I purchased a new (used) 09 Plate Mazda 3 2.2 Diesel from a well known dealership in Reading. It had done roughly 21K miles and was a fair price.

Anyhow, when collecting the car I did notice the tyres had considerably worn on the fronts and I measured this to be 3mm. This was agreed by the dealership as the 'legal limit they can sell with'. I was assured this had been passed on the service it had before handover. As the deal had already been made in essence there wasn't much I could and drove away still happy.

I estimate to drive roughly 20K a year, so I imagined the tyres would last me until January at a push.

1 month on and say around 1000-1500 miles later, BOTH of the front inner area of my tyres are completely destroyed. So much so, I am not driving my car currently as I am surprised they haven't blown (metal showing on both front inner area) I can get photos if anyone is interested, they are shockingly scary.

To point out, I am not a boy racer, I take things quite easily and like more MPG over booting it everywhere.

Considering it's only been a month, I am slightly pee'd off at the fact I am going to have to replace the tyres, probably £80-£100 quid a tyre (205 50 R17's)

As this wear is ONLY on the inner area of the tyres, it hints that tracking could be out quite badly.

As the deal has already been done, do I really have ANY leg to stand on by phoning up the dealership and having a moan? I am considering getting an independent verdict from trading standards or another garage and send this dowe to the dealership. Just to prove that this wear could not of possibly been done in under 1 month.

I think I already know the answer but thoughts are appreciated. I know the blame will come to me as 'the way I have driven it'

Cheers,

Mike

sounds like the tracking is miles out.

where theres blame theres a claim

or you could take responsibility for not getting it checked sooner by spending £30 on sorting the tracking (most places check it for free) and replace the tyres.

can the dealer supply/fit tyres? might be worth having a moan if they can supply them, if they can give you a worthwhile discount as a gsture of good will etc... but you will need to get the tracking done.

If only the inners are worn then it's not down to how you drive but down to how the car was set up, I think you may have a case to get new tyres out of them if you play it right.

Thanks for the input so far, I am still considering phoning them, they will no doubt want photos.

@Matt82: On the tracking note, I ASSUMED (yes I know) it had no issues considering I had only just purchased the car.

When I get back later, I will try and take some photos. Quite hard when it's dark in the morning and at night :)

Cheers,

They were down to 3mm when you got it, it was about time to replace them anyway. Get two new tyres and the alignment done and it will be fine.

Sounds like both front wheels are toeing out causing the inners to wear. The only issue I can see is that the cars tracking is not checked on a service so they may try to wriggle out of replacing them. Most tyre places offer a free tracking check and will give you a print out of how it's currenty set up. I'd get a check done and take the print out to the garage to got it from and see what they say.

Shock as a a consumerable, is consumed. Tracking can go out at any point and this could have been because of you, kerb or pot hole and you don’t really have any recourse on this whole issue.

This is something you should have negotiated into the deal when you purchased the car. You were aware the tread was low and so was the dealer but you still proceeded with the purchse.

As I said, I am looking for any leg to stand on really so thanks for the comments so far.

This is true, though the deal had already been done. This was only discussed at handover more then anything.

My point is that, I don't believe I could have knocked out the tracking this much to cause this much uneven worn tyres.

When I get a moment I will show some photos.

It could be the tracking was already out when they received the car and either deliberately or accidentally it was never adjusted correctly. The two low tread tyres may have simply been a couple of legal tyres they had kicking around and saw the chance of a short cut.

Just ring them up and complain, if they don't play ball then give them a link to the recent 16 year old tyre thread here and links to the new story, sit back and wait. :)

If they were down to 3mm then I personally wouldn't have purchased the car unless the dealer put some fresh rubber on. When I purchased my Accord, I too noticed uneven tyre wear on the front inners, so I pointed this out and stated that I would only purchase the car if they sorted out the alignment and put some fresh decent rubber on.

I feel for you - annoying spot to be in.

The problem is you are the one who would have to prove the tracking was out at time of purchase & they sold it that way to be certain of getting anything out of them.

Try calling and speaking with them - they may offer a good will gesture.

But if it ever came to more on them, I'm afraid you would have trouble getting anywhere as tracking is something that can fall out of alignment at any time pretty much.

Personally I wouldn't even call them, just order a pair of decent tyres from a reasonable website and get the car down to somewhere like wheels in motion for a proper alignment.

Even if they did "sort" it for you - it would likely be a quick job for them ;)

WiM will do it properly and you won't have to worry about it for another year or two of normal driving...

You have no claim really at this stage.

May be worth having a look on blackcircles.com or a similar online tyre place, get a fitted price for the tyres and then call up the local fitting place they will have linked you to, to find out how much tracking will be and whether they can beat the online price (mine does).

Get it inspected when the tyres are fitted. Likely case is, it will be the tracking which will be £10-30 to get done, however if there is anything else wrong with the suspension or even hints of accident damage then you may have some recourse with the dealer.

If it is just tracking and tyres, it is not worth persuing.

Cheers for the replies guys, as I suspected the majority of saying I don't really have any paths to persue with the dealer unless something 'big' is uncovered.

Just more disappointed then anything :(

I will get some photos when I can (probably tomorrow day time) and arrange for some new tyres to be fitted + tracking checked.

Cheers

The only thing you have to be dissapointed in in this case is yourself. You drove away knowing there was 3mm on the tyres. 3mm is the point at which it is recommended you change tyres so in effect you've lost absolutely nothing that you didnt already know.

You bought a car 1500 miles ago that required new tyres. You now have a car that.. requires new tyres.

Best case scenario the garage will put on 2x LingLong's or WanLi tyres as a good will gesture.

Worst case they will explain that tyre wear is not covered under the standard three month warranty.

Personally I would just put two new tyres on as at least you will get to choose what you get.

True, I was aware they would need new tyres soon though beyond 3mm in around 1500 miles -That's a bit silly, no? Exacty mileage will follow tonight with photos.

I have a mobile tyre fitter friend popping by tomorrow to take a look at the uneven wear for another opinion.

You had the smartness and knowledge to recognise the car you were buying had worn out tyres. Even more so only on the inner edge which is harder to spot and points to uneven wear.

Yet you still bought it and now complain it needs new tyres?

Just buy 2 new tyres and get the alignment sorted. £250 all in?

The amount of wear over 1500 miles is irrelevant. What is relevant is at the time of purchase the tyres were legal and safe. Unlike the other thread where that OP was sold illegal tyres, yours were perfectly fine. The fact that thy are worn means jut that, your worn them out with your driving. The out of alignment factor can be fixed when you put on new tyres.

You are not going to go back because the washer ran out are you?
