Convince me to buy a Civic Type R (EP3)!

Don't forget, if you have a Jap car you must have a Nurburgring circuit sticker on the back even if you've never been there

I am paying a lot more on the Civic than my Golf, insurance is crap this year.

Pretty much 600 quid fully comp 6 yrs protected ncb, 250 quid excess, all the trimmings and DOC but no breakdown, with Sky. They were the best followed by A-Plan and Flux.

Thing is, I'm 30 now! But it's not too bad, parked on the road in a not so great area...

god, im 40 1 year ncb, 612.. that was cheapest i could find

I now own a CTR EP3 :D

I have a slight whine noise more prominent when going through the gears lower down the revs, moreso in 4th. Now a few people from googling have had the same issue but haven't read of anything conclusive... it generally points to the alternator belt/pulley/tensioner area OR "just a normal timing chain noise".

Anyone else had experience of this?

When the car is cold, it feels as though it has a flat spot around 1500rpm, do you reckon new plugs would be worth a shot? Do these things use coilpacks or leads or what, not even really had time to look under the bonnet yet :D

Also, the interior lights, is it me or does only the rear light come on when the doors are opened and the front lights are purely map reading lights? Quirky if so :)

no whine here, except reverse.... the injectors seem loud though, with that really high pitched sound when at stand still and revving.

interior lights don't come on when door opens, didn't know there was one in back as front ones only come on manually

i've noticed gears seems quite notchy when cold, but i guess this is same with all CTRs

Thats the joyous thing about mine, the gearbox is sweet hot or cold! Been reading and everyone recommends you MUSTTTT use MTF3 Honda transmission fluid but mine has Castrol SMX 75/85 fully synth... I hope it's not my gearbox which whines, as the gears feel awesome, great feeling gearbox on this one.

The interior lights dont come on with open doors at the front, only the rear light when car unlocked/doors opened. Odd but there you go lol.

I do think they're quite noisy engines just idling away. Mine will need valve clearances doing soonish for my peace of mind which will hopefully help :)

They all rattle and sound dodgy when cold. Valve clearance will improve things slightly if they haven't been done a while but don't get yourself excited about it. Also what engine oil are you running as Honda specced the wrong sort from factory due to availability.

Lot of them whine through the gears aswell, just make sure you treat second gear with some care if you don't want to be having it crunching all the time later in the cars life!

Also before they start eating the rear tyres check how they are wearing. The rear arms can sag/bow and kill a set of tyres quickly, if they've started doing it then buy some aftermarket adjustable ones on the ASAP!

Went to see that - very, very clean. Better state than the DC5's that are on the market

Only issue is it's developed a drop on the rev counter as VTEC kicks in, need to find out WTF that is. He reckons its a new cluster job at £70 for parts, I was slightly dubious.

But my god, does it go some and then you boot it out of a corner and the whole car just sings :o

Looks very nice does that Muffin!

@Alex*TLR: It's ran on Fuchs Titan Pro S 5w/40 fully synth, changed every 6k for the last 3.5 years lol maybe a bit overkill, not sure. I aren't sure wether to get my gearbox oil changed, it has Castrol SMX-S 75w/85 fully synth I think, done about 2 years ago. All the Honda forum chaps say you simply MUST use Honda MTF3...

Buy it? I'm gonna marry it!

It's ok, it's been saving its self for me for the last 14 years.

...£3400 :)

 ! Arghhh!

I can't find any of these bargains about!! to make matters worse I've started juggling my like for Hondas between the EP3, FN2 & DC5 :o

EP3 is getting old :p

FN2 looks nice.. but the dash is a bit

DC5 is very tasty.. But expensive for a good one, and I get the impression that the majority have been in the hands of not so great owners.

I'm trying to hold off on buying something until I turn 24 in March, the weather is on my side then and It won't be sitting on a farm yard that's covered in Winter muck and mud!
