New Car (Used) - 1500 Miles Done - Both front inner tyres gone

You had the smartness and knowledge to recognise the car you were buying had worn out tyres. Even more so only on the inner edge which is harder to spot and points to uneven wear.

Yet you still bought it and now complain it needs new tyres?

Just buy 2 new tyres and get the alignment sorted. £250 all in?

More complaining at the speed of deterioation and the state of the inner tyres

To answer your question, yer looking at around £250-£300 for a branded pair.

The amount of wear is irrelevant. What is relevant is at the time of purchase the tyres were legal and safe.

You are not going to go back because the washer ran out are you?

This is funny actually because my washer fluid was empty which I noticed 10 miles away from the place! :)

I'm afraid you're going to have to take it on the chin.

What I am thinking has happened is you brought up the tyre issue after agreeing on a price with the dealer. They used a bit of sales pressure and you buckled and bought it regardless.

Take it on the chin and next time around don't be overwhelmed with the car purchase process or sales patter and make a stand.

The only thing you have to be dissapointed in in this case is yourself.

I really wish you'd stop sugar coating things and just say what you think for once. :p

Though it pains me to say it...true and well said.

This is actually a good thing - you've discovered your tracking is out by breaking already broken tyres, thereby saving your new pair from the same slanty fate!

See, there's always a silver lining :).

Guys, I bought a coffee from starbucks but now I have drank it and, well, now all I have left is an empty cup. I can't help but feel I have been ripped off? Disappointed maybe? Do you think I should complain?

You may have been able to insist on an alignment check at purchase, but a bit late now, gonna have to just do it yourself I think.

Very good...though a low blow!

Thanks for the comments, I will still deliver those photos I promised once I have the tyres changed. The tread is low - 2mm on inner edge / on the line measuring thing, BUT the pealing away and tyre wall issues / breaking apart which I may not of mentioned earlier are the most interesting part.

I'll update this over the next couple of days.

So after getting the car to a garage here are some photos and the feedback:

Tracking: Checked and not out, only the steering wheel slightly out.

Tyre Pressure: Both fronts at 22 PSI which explains why middle is still 2-2 1/2 mm Tread left and the sides have deshaped

Now for the shocking photos:

Only thing I can say is - Jesus how the hell did you not notice that the tyres had got into such such a state before they got into that state?

Would you check the INNER area of the tyres after buying a car 1 month ago?

As it happens I would, I always tend to give my front tyres a glance whenever I get into my car, for me this task is easy as when I park my car on my drive I always have the steering locked to the right which means that I can give the fronts a glance. My wifes car is normally parked next to mine so I always tend to also give that a glance.

What tyres are they? Toyo ???? reason I ask is that from the pics, never mind the inners, the rest of the tyres look pretty much scrubbed as there's no real tread pattern visible.

True, I have been told to do this in the future, locking the wheel that is.

That's right Toyo R32 Prox's, yes they are low but nowhere near expected for the inners to be in that state.

Either way, I have passed these onto the dealer and await their comeback.

Just noticed that you said the tyre pressure was only 22 psi, did you have tramlining problems, reason I ask is that when I purchased my car the tyres were also well under-inflated and I had extreme tramlining problems. First thing I did was check the tyre pressures and then I rang the dealer who apologised and said that the tyre fitter had a dodgy pressure gauge as others had also reported this.

Just as a piece of advice that will hopefully be of use to some people reading this thread - a 12v compressor is worth its weight in gold. I've got a Ring Automotive one which cost me the princely sum of £14 delivered. Once a week I spend less than ten minutes just whipping round my tyres to check them, and topping up if needed.

Aside from making tyres last longer and therefore reducing running costs, if you're wise enough to worry about tyres and realise what the implications are, then take the few minutes to check them with a piece of kit (or check when you fill up).

Hope that planted the seeds of some thoughts in some heads!
