I am watching the BBC News before I go to work. They just had a report about the night sky and displayed a picture of the Earth at night. This exact pic:

All is well and good until they seemed to feel the need to say (and I quote as closely as possible)

This is the Earth at night. Japan to the right, America to the left and Europe in the middle

Really?!? We need to dumb down news programmes to actually TELL people where places like Japan, America and Europe are on a picture of the Earth? :confused:

Granted, individual countries might be difficult at times but surely people know the layout of the main continents? :confused:
 
It was probably just to fill a few seconds of airtime. Or perhaps for any kids watching. Or chavs.
 
I quite like that picture. I've always found it surprising just how much of the planet's surface is largely uninhabited. Granted, some places won't have electricity/many people, but still...

Yes, it is daft. I always remember that Clarkson DVD where he asked someone in Vegas to name however many European countries it was, and the guy said Australia... :rolleyes:
 
The general populas are inherent morons who form opinions and decisions on spoon fed information.

I was speaking to someone who left school this year with a B grade GCSE math as we were in a cash and carry store. I told them to remember prices were excluding VAT at 20% and they replied "I am useless at percentages". I looked at them and said okay start off with an easy one; say this lot comes to £50 how much is 20% of that and they hadn't a clue.

I do wonder what the hell they teach in schools and how the basics are often being overlooked.

It's a troubling perspective after being used to the UK/Europe being in the middle :p I thought having the US in the middle was daft as then most of the map was taken up by oceans, with the other (less important, obviously) countries squeezed up on either side!

General Populas, from the Greek military. Raised to the rank not through his intelligence and cunning, but nepotism - only reason he's still in his position is that his aids spoon feed him information. Sad state of affairs to be honest.

There are certain things everyone should know. What each continent looks like is really quite fundamental.
