My 5 year old pair of Nike Free trainers have had their day. I think they seem to be discontinued. Just wondering if anyone can recommend something that will give more support than plimsoles but lite and low profile. Will be used for gym work.

I use vivobarefoot evo shoes in the gym. Designed as barefoot running shoes, they are very thin with zero heel to toe drop. I really like them and have ended up wearing them around town much of the time as well now. It just feels weird wearing thick soled shoes where I can't feel the cracks in the pavement now! :)

they look like they can do a job, i have trouble twisting ankles with thick soled shoes, so like what you said about feeling the cracks in the pavement, if i can feel what my foot is on i dont twist my ankle, its the plodding with big soles on uneven ground which makes me twist an ankle

some people find vibrams over hyped and their soles do stink like no mans!

Also Vibrams fitting can be a issue as your toes are in essance forced into boxs, so it might be a good idea to try them out before buying.

Another option are the Merrel trail gloves style shoes which have a normal trainer box for the toes so your feet can "fan out" in their own way.

I'm not sure about for the gym but i was looking into the whole barefoot running craze a while back because i have no end of problems when i go running normally (back pain, knee pain etc etc) and, rather than shell out £100 for some Vibrams that might not even work, i tried some cheap-ass pair of aqua socks, i think i got mine for about £4 from Sports Direct

Tried em out and voila! no joint pain, just my calves on fire instead because they were actually doing all the work now instead! (so the good kind of pain)

As i say, dont know if they're what you want for the gym but they're thin, flexible, give good feedback from the floor and for that price if you dont like them you can give 'em to the dog!

I wear Merell Trail Gloves for CrossFit. Again, Zero heel to toe drop so they are good for all of the lifts we do.

They look a bit weird but are very comfortable. Probably wouldn't be doing any distance running in them just yet. You can try em on in Schuh/Cotswold outdoors as well which is a bonus.
