Home cinema in lounge project....help!

*agrees* I hadn't considered suggesting that. Good use of space too.

If you stick a massive mirror on the feature wall it'll make it look bigger as well...though tbh I can't tell how big the room is so it might not be needed/wanted!

Thats not a bad idea at all.....a full size L shaped sofa won't fit though, there is a large radiator from the bay window to where the sofa is on the diagram. A full size would block access to the dining area/kitchen! You can get slightly smaller L shaped tho....this for example:

I have to say I'm not a fan of having a tv in the bay window, looks crap from outside and can be hard to watch when the curtains are open. Having the projector screen there is a great idea though, as you say the extra distance means could get a 100"+ screen. Maybe its possible to leave the tv where it is, should be able to see it still from an L shape sofa.

Grrr I thought I was getting closer, now am back to sqaure one hahah

lol I wouldn't say so. At least now we know that despite having an epic projector screen on that wall isn't an option, an from what I recall you didn't want an L shape sofa if the TV was against the red wall? The link I posted earlier has that style of sofa in loads of styles, including a sofa bed if you wanted the option.

Room is approx 8m long and 3.3m wide at the widest.

Distance from back wall to the kitchen (dining area basically) is 2.4mx2.4m. Most full size L shaped sofas are around 2.7m!

Which isn't an option? It is an option to have the projector screen over the bay window....tv I'm not so sure about...but they don't have to be in the same place....perhaps if the tv is in the corner of the feature wall, looking back towards where the L shaped sofa might be......

Indeed I wasn't planning on an L shaped sofa I have to admit, as I said the full size won't fit...a small one might be an option....

Ah ok, I figured you wanted to have projector/tv in the same place, so if you didn't want the TV in the bay I assumed that the projector would follow suit. my bad!

Well that was indeed the original plan, but I don't think there is any NEED for them to be in the same place. As long as both are easily in view! The benefit of projector at that end is that it can be a larger screen, option for 7.1. Down side is that the TV wouldn't be in an ideal position.

To be honest saying what I did about having the TV in the bay and PJ there too probably not the best idea now you have mentioned about radiators etc. I have a pretty much square room and to get the best viewing distance I have to have the TV in the bay as it sits level with the wall (wall mounting is not an option for me) but I do have the PJ on a different wall, same again maximising viewing distance. My room is 12ft x 12 ft give or take. Not sure what that is in metres though. I might give this Sketchup a go to give you an idea.

Not going to be much help with choosing colours etc, but what ever you decide make a mock up out of newspaper so you can see how big it is. We picked a pair of sofas we liked that we thought would fit ok until we actually made bits of paper the right size and realised they were too big in the end we went much smaller and moved a radiator!

Why don't you think its a good idea? I actually think its got a lot of potential! As you say its the best option to get the largest screen, allows 7.1 sound. Basically makes better use of the space. Only downside really is that the tv might not be in the perfect position. I think I would leave it against the feature wall, but in the corner of it, and then have the projector screen over the bay window. I just need to do some measuring and see how well a L shape sofa will fit, or even perhaps a 3 seater across the back, doesn't ahve to be a L shape sofa I suppose. I've sketched out some ideas, will post them in a sec.

This is a great idea, I'll find an average size for an L shape sofa and make a mock up paper shadow to see how it fits.

Here are the pics I made:

Comments? Room is basically to scale, not so much the furniture! The big stretched tv by the window is the best I could do to show where the projector screen would be, coming down from the ceiling.

I probably didn't make my post clear enough reading through it again. What I meant was the Tv not being best placed in the bay but the PJ screen should be there like we both said it gives better potential for 7.1

OP. Any chance of your original room plan so I can have a play on sketchup?

Edit 2 : Is the room to scale?

Ah I see, well I've put the tv in the corner in those pics, I think its def better then the bay!

I actually have the room in a basic sketchup file if you want to have a go? Would be much appreciated. I don't really know how to use it, just managed to make that original picture! The sketchup pic is to scale and correct, only thing it doesn't have is the radiator which starts 50cm from the end of the room (by the bay window) and is 177cm long! I can email you the file if your interested?

Yeah ok cool. cmsharples75 @ ntlworld dot com I wont have much time to have a go tonight due to missus coming home from work and have to go shopping. I will deffo have a look tomorrow.

Have to admit, I think after seeing the pics the bay option would appeal, what about having the tv in the opposite corner to the door closest to the bay? then you could have a chair next to it in the actual bay if you wanted? Not sure how it would look but worth a go.

Then have the sofa as you've got it now, or possibly with the long side of it backing onto the wall with the doors on it?

Unfortunately I have been dragged into a Twilight bluray fest tonight with my missus and her friend. I cant get out of it due to it being played on my PJ and I dont trust anyone with that. I will deffo have a blast with the layout tomorrow night mate. I got your email last night anyway, cheers for that.

I've done a lot of measuring and been using the 2 chairs and coffee table that I already have to try and make a 'footprint' of an L shape sofa to see what it could look like. I am starting to have my doubts that it will be an ideal solution. Even a 4 seater L sofa (the smaller ones) doesn't leave much room to get to the dining area/kitchen. Another issue is that the height of the sofa will really 'close off' the area around the tv and that end of the room, since you wouldn't be able to see the dinner table, and only a small amount out of the patio doors. I'm still undecided, so will have to see if I can find a decent layout!

No problem mate, althou you have my sympathy having to watch all the twilights back to back haha. Any opinions whenever you can spare it is welcome!

Pretty much decided that a corner sofa isn't really going to be viable, unless people can show me other wise! I'm leaning towards having a 3 and 2 seater in the room, which will allow for a lot more options in positioning the sofas.

I've still not decided the best place to put the TV and Projector screen. Whilst the Bay window is an option, and would allow for a bigger screen and 7.1 sound, it will also be harder to actually arrange the sofas around. Any of you have any suggestions for the layout are still welcome!
