What a nightmare this has been.

Basically my girlfriend has been wanting to play BF3, but she only had a
Q6600
3GB 667ddr2 ram
9500gs
and a cheap unbranded PSU.

-I firstly put in Corsair 4gb of xms2 DDR2 800Mhz ram

Worked fine.

Then put in my old 4850. Machine booted fine although any 3d rendering that was processed would cause coil squeal. Due to this I upgraded the PSU to a Corsair CX600W.

Fan spinning at 100% constantly. Machine works fine though. Basically sending this back as I have also found out it uses cheap chinese parts and does not have the build quality of the Corsair PSU's i have bought in the past.

My question is. Which power supply should I buy? The computer will most likely get a 560ti put in also around christmas or later on in the new year. So ideally I want a powersupply that is future proof.

Been looking at this. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-057-OC&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=1098

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys! :D

P.S Forgot to mention, ideally a power supply that is as quiet as possible. (If you have the PSU yourself and can tell me how loud it is that would be great)

I know, my HX520 and my dads HX620 are modular. Shame really as all my other corsair products have been fantastic. I advise anyone to stay away from the CX series.

Surprising how expensive PSUs are these days.

I managed to find a 780 watt OCZ modular PSU for £58, and later a Tagan BZ 1100 watt for £109 :)

I cant find anything thats modular and a decent price today.

I recieved this from the official corsair forum rep!

"The cx series PSU's are overrated, that 600w is more like a 500 watt and the OEM that sourcesthe cx line usese rather cheap chinese parts. get a refund if you still can or if they offer an RMA insist they upgrade you to a gs series equivilent."

And thats why its a shame that Tagan arent around anymore, they only made top quality PSUs, no cheapskate stuff.

Corsair have been dumbing down some of their ram and PSU lines recently, rather shocking for their reputation.

Completely agree. I most likely wont purchase another Corsair product untill they pickup their act!

The Corsair Vengeance ram I got was overpriced, and exactly the same as the £40 per 8 Gb stuff from other manufacturers. I sent their customer support an email and they wouldnt do anything because it was working as advertised.

When I had Geil and OCZ ram in the past, both offered me RMAs and like for like replacements simply because I e mailed them saying I was unhappy with the OCs and asked for help with OCing them (I didnt take up the RMA offers as it was wasteful). I asked Corsair if I could have my naff cheapskate 2.12 sticks replaced with the good 5.11 ones which were what I thought I was buying, and they said no. Corsair Vengeance ram is advertised as overclocking ram, not ram that only works at its rated specification!

That OCZ is around the same standard in component quality as the CX600.
They only real difference is the higher output 648 W instead of 480 W. (+12 V is what counts)

Fan sound like it's rubbing, so probably a faulty unit.

Coil squeal is just resonance, your unlucky if you get it. Coils will vibrate at certain frequencies. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechanical_resonance

Silverstone and OCZ like Corsair don't make power supplies, they just get oems to make them to their required spec, normally based on a standard the oem already makes.

The CX series is the budget model of the corsair range and at the end of the day you get what you pay for, if it had better components it would cost more. :)

If you want a better quality PSU in that price range XFX Pro 550W is a good deal. (528 W +12V)

Oem is Seasonic, the same as the CX 600, but does use better components.
