Surely the "next generation" must be due?

2 years minimum which is actually good news for gamers as they are forced to refine existing game engines & squeeze a little more out & the consoles are getting cheaper gradually as the volume is increasing & they become more mainstream.

Also the next gen will most likely be 32 bit so restricted to 3.5-4Gb System Ram max I doubt they will bother with the extra complexity of 64 bit software anytime soon.

I would expect 2Gb Vram minimum & perhaps be modular to allow for future expansion like a new CPU/GPU etc etc

Erm lol, extra complexity of 64bit.

They've had years of practice on the x64 platform.

Look at the fuss they made over the CELL in the PS3.

They're not worried about making it hard for developers, they need to move on.

I'm ready for the Next Gen now, not that I have any major issues with the Current Gen but just know technology has moved on so much and I'd like to see it on the consoles. Just hope that they're not built around kinect and stuff like that. I have a feeling MS are going to go the Kinect route so my hopes are with Sony to do a gamers console if you know what I mean.

Yes, I was thinking exactly the same. MS seem to be drifting toward a home media device with films, TV, social stuff, Kinect videochat, etc. and gaming as an afterthought. :D

They won't do.
They know what their market it is.

All the features you've mentioned is no different to what Playstation offers and are becoming standard features of what is on a console. Sony promised it back with the Playstation 2 but failed to deliver on the promise.

Amazon had a 1TB drive for £46 recently, been like that for months and finally went to buy it today and it's >£70!! Missed the boat there.

I just hope they don't all go 3D and OTT with motion technology - or i'm out of the game. I hate both those techs, they ruin games for me.

not 2.5" ones they didn't which is what the ps3 uses.

3.5" drives have been cheap for many years now, even at £70 that it still very cheap.

SSD and 2.5" are expensive though.

there is no way SSD will be standard in next gen consoles, i can tell you that right now as a fact, the cost of producing a console would more than double if they added decent sized SSD's.

3D is a feature of the ps3 currently, it will always be an option for those that want to use it, you wont be forced to use it in anyway and would need to be enabled as it would be disabled by default in the settings. same goes for motion technology, these things are extras, they aren't standard for every game.

Current generation is limiting games, time for the new gen!

Graphics has finally reached as good as it gets on current gen consoles.

During the PS2 era we had this 'no better then this' era for years before the PS3 was announced let alone released.

Spoilt today :p honestly.

Hmmm, MS could do it ;) I mean, if they really wanted to dominate the console market then whats stopping them building a $900 per unit machine and selling for $250.
Has to be more productive spending their 70+ billion sitting around in this manner then the way excess cash is being used at the moment. ie: voice controlled bedrooms and touch sensitive wallpaper.

My post was in response to OP who basically offered no credible reason for the need for a new generation and it just sounds like he wants to buy something. Kinda like how people actually want each new iPhone.

ah, fair enough, just thought you were replying to me :)

I'm not a developer of any kind for consoles, but I have read a few articles in the past few years where developers are crying out for more memory in consoles - not more cpu power or gfx power, just memory. Does anyone think that consoles should have an in-built expansion facility for such things in the future? Or would this just complicate the picture where games released later in a consoles life cycle that require the memory expansion would confuse and anger customers?

Yes they should, and it has happened before on the N64! the N64 ram expantion pack doubled the memory from 4mb to a whopping 8mb lol ahh the good old days.
If current gen had that option it would extend the life of the consoles for another couple of years as the CPU/GPU arent terrible its just 512mb is poor, so devs cut back on resolution etc and juggle things around to balance things out

No, very bad idea.

The N64 RAM expansion pack just about worked, but look at Sega's add-ons with the Mega-CD and 32X.

It's a mistake that has generally been learnt from that era. Addons are confusing to the consumer and cost sales because you've got the problem of diluting your target audience. Even on this generation, in the earlier days of the Xbox 360 it was annoying that the Xbox Core had no hard drive.

if they wanted to do that, they would have done so with their launch console, in order to stamp themselves on the market. makes no sense to change their strategy now, when its a 2 horse race with a pony (nintendo) for show.

it will never happen, bill gates likes to spread his money about, he isnt going to plow it all into a hole. all it takes is 1 bad move in the console market and your bust, just look at Sega.

I'm 99.9% sure the Xbox 360 the ps3 are 64bit

No, it fragments the market and most developers will never use it for that reason.

The next consoles will have more than enough for the final push for more 1080 frame buffers but I still expect developers to just add more fidelity at 720p30.

If you think about it, a 720p30 image requires 2,764,800 pixels to be filled every second. If you went to 1080p60 then that figure jumps to a massive 12,441,600 pixels every second. It's a massive leap for hardware that has to be affordable for the mass market.

I also expect more games to make use of tripe buffering or locked frame rates to reduce screen tear. resolution and frame rates have been shown to have no bearing on game sales or reviews. Fidelity and tearing have.
