what did you do for work experience at school?

Went to a Chartered Accountants for a week or so, got to play around with the adding machine and drafting trial balances on those massive bits of paper.

Managed to score a summer job out of it too!

Now I work in IT earning considerably less then a CA. :(

I worked in a Quicksilver outlet shop in a shopping centre. It was so quiet that we had literally one customer in the entire week. I sent my days playing pinball on the pc and watching skate videos.

I was paid in "You can pick any three items of merchandise" so I got a deck, a pair of trousers and a shirt. Apparently the boss let the staff take a few items every month. He was later fired for theft from the company.

I'm not supposed to say as it was covered by the official secrets act and what happened took place over the wrong line on some map, all I will say is that there were bogeys like fireflies all over the sky.......

Back in the boring world known as reality.

I worked in a Microwave repair factory for two weeks, it was interesting to see just how badly made consumer goods are and how easily they could be fixed with a mixture of cable ties and soldering wires over crack is PCB's.

CA's dont earn that much do they?

I could not find any places so in the last week a placement opened up close by and I did 2 weeks at the Defence Munitions (MOD) - I got to see how they store missiles and other bits and helped label the crates up which was the "job" itself, got to fire a GPMG (machine gun) in the armoury and held the Walter PPK used by James Bond :D

I then went on to work in IT :p

Worked in a local Italian car garage, worked mostly on lancia's and Alfa's though the odd Maserati came in. Got paid £60 for the two weeks I was there and got a saturday/school holiday job out of it

Enjoyed it :)

I went in the Army for two weeks for my work experience.

The guys I spent most of the time with didn't even know it was for my work experience until it was almost over. It was a lot of fun though.

Oh goodness this post is going to bring on some nastiness..

But I worked down RAF Lynham for a week. Servicing Hercules aircraft.

During the week

1) Got all over the aircraft .. I was interested at the time - quite good fun. Mostly involving a grease gun!
2) Got about 15 flights .. basically as many flights as I wanted they just booked me in with the crew (so was in the cockpit throughout). And it wasn't boring as they were practicing 'engine outs', 'tight turns', 'low drops', 'short landings' etc. I can honestly say there was virutally no straight, level flying!! It was friggin' awesome apart from when I felt sick. I was also patched into the instructors radio so I could hear him rollocking the pilots which was great.
3) Had a go MYSELF in the hercules simulator. Which defies words. Stalled. Crashed. Lol'ed! Did you know you can ONLY fly night flights .. as 'these are more difficult than day flights, so whats the point of simulating day flights?'!!!
4) The last day I was there was a day before an airshow. All the F16, F18 (etc) pilots did their routines (which I watched whilst sunbathing on the wing of a Hercules) then they landed and came over and chatted to us all about their fighters for about 3 hours. Which was great as I really wanted to be RAF at that time.

Mental!

Sorry but this sounds too far fetched for work experience >___>

I did mine at British Aerospace Systems & Equipment, did all sorts, assembling gyroscopes for Sea Dart missiles and aircraft artificial horizons (for the Hawk IIRC), soldering connectors for black boxes, aligning read/write heads for massive magnetic platters and inspecting PCB tracks under microscopes in clean rooms wearing a full "Noddy suit" as they were called. It was great fun :)
