Why do people buy high octane petrol?

Peerzy was asking about using generic Super Unleaded compared with the holy grail V-Power.

I posted that the difference between generic Super Unleaded and V-Power is "not worth worrying about IMO", and that my only consideration would be the garages sales of Super Unleaded as you don't want fuel that's been sat in their tanks for ages (average Esso customer just wants regular, petrolhead who wants every last drop of performance goes to Shell to get the holy grail V-power → Esso don't sell much of their Super).

How is that not relevant?

The difference between Esso Supreme and regular unleaded is actually the same as that between Supreme and V-Power, therefore under your logic it would be even better to use regular as that is even less likely to have sat around.
 
I used Super Unleaded in the Capri along with a Lead additive & octane booster. Simply due to the fact the car didn't sount right at high revs running on the normal stuff and the ignition timing was still set up to run on ye olde leaded 4-star.
 
Because the Workshop Manual says... "Owing to the high compression ratio, fuels with an octane rating below 98 are not suitable - should it be necessary to use a lower octane number the car must be used carefully until the correct fuel can be obtained." It then goes on to say... "It is necessary to use fuels in the 100[!!] octane range unless only premium (min 98+) octane research are available".

Right. Not actually sure why the last sentence appears to slightly contradict that first section.

Having said that I'm also in the small group that have to add lead to my fuel so.... :p
 
So I'm still very confused, will normal super expensive petrol kill my engine or is V Power just the same stuff but with a brand name?

V power is higher octane so has more power so could damage the engine or clutch. Porsche wouldn't tell you to use it if it didn't have more power
 
I think that most Porsche engines will be fine on the super market type high octane. Though I know some people that say stay away from sainsburys high octane.
