So just tried selling my first item on the bay - a phone.

Was bought within seconds on me listing it. Also received a message following it which said -

I WANT YOU TO MESSAGE ME ABOUT THE CONDITION OF THE ITEM AND SEND ME YOUR PAYPAL EMAIL ADDRESS OR EMAIL ADDRESS AND IF POSSIBLE THE PICTURE OF THE ITEM FOR PROPER CONFIRMATION,SEND THIS TO MY MAIL.........**********@YAHOO.CO.UK, IN OTHER FOR ME TO MAKE QUICK PAYMENT. REGARDS.

Haven't mentioned the name here as of yet but it is very nigerian sounding...the all caps message also makes me very suspicious. Not to mention the fact that clicking on his profile shows he has 0 feedback (which, while I dislike, can't say much since I also have 0 as i'm just starting) and that he joined up today. Pretty much 99.99% sure it's a scam.

The address he's asked to dispatch it to is a Bristol address.

Question is - what is the next step in this case? Never really used ebay before (except for buying one thing some time back) so not sure what I do in this scenario.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ive had an email more or less the same a few weeks ago, with regards to a laptop, its deffo a scam, i reported to facebook and the account was banned.

There's your problem. You'll get a lot of this kind of thing, best to put restrictions like only UK bidders, need x feedback etc.

I personally just send mine for recycling, you don't get as much but it's far less hassle.

Should've said UK bidders only but i'm guessing since his delivery address is Bristol, that wouldn't have helped?

Problem with saying 'no 0 feedback' is that I myself have 0 feedback. Would that put people off?

Tute - I do agree and usually prefer recycling. This was a brand new phone though (new as in unopened and sealed box. not otherwise cause its a (now ancient) nokia e63.

Chatting to ebay live help now. Let's see how that goes.

That's the thing, it will be worth it financially if you can get a winner who isn't only interested in scamming you. Sadly I think you'll struggle as it'll just get bidded to silly levels, won, and you'll get an email asking to send to Lagos. :/

Ok, just finished with live chat. Incredibly helpful.

Took a few moments to look over, asked if I got any message from the buyer which I showed. Couple of mins later, said that the buyer was going to be banned, the item delisted and fees refunded. Have to list again, but quick resolution on the issue at least!

To the experienced buyers on here - If I had a 'no 0 feedback' restriction on the item, even though I myself had 0 feedback, would that put you off?

i would start by selling a few lowish value items and buy some as well, before selling anything of value, then set my buyer restrictions as tight as possible

have you looked at phone recycling sites, i sold a ipone 3gs to one got £160 when i would only get about £200ish on ebay, for the extra £40 its not worth it when the fees are taken out

Yea, I can imagine. I wouldn't buy from someone with zero feedback :p

*sigh* everyone has to start somewhere though. Might as well try my luck and see how it goes!

Tried phone recycling sites, but they are giving me around 46. CEX is doing the best at around 56 (75 or so for credit, but don't have anything I need to buy from there).

Past rates at which the phone has sold though, is at 125 (on eBay). Listing I went for was 80 onwards bid or 120 buy it now; so if it sells, double.

The hassle involved is the main reason i've never used ebay until now but thought I would give it a shot. Didn't expect to get scammed within seconds >_<

Thankfully I do know enough not to fall for the obvious ones.
