VW Scirocco TDI...buying advice

That is the looks, which is fine but that is also thinking like a woman.

Now think like a man for a bit and test drive the 1.4 and 2.0 petrol engine.

Lol classic raymond

Can't speak about the 2.0 petrol but the 1.4TSI isn't as nice to drive as the diesel is. It's only 10 BHP less but it just feels more strained. Why pay more for something worse?

Eh? I know I am biased but really? The 1.4 tsi in the scirocco is of the 160ps tune but it feels lovely, far better than a lumpy 2.0 tdi.

I've driven a 129bhp 1.4TSI and it drives far more "nicely" than most 4cyl diesels I've driven, so I'd imagine the higher-powered TSIs are even better. It just felt like a nice smooth ~2L petrol. :)

Why pay £20k for something noisy and lumpy?

I can't agree that i'd take the 120bhp version of the 1.4 over the 170bhp TDI sadly. It's a decent engine but a bit lacking in places, the extra power of the TDI is worth the tradeoff.

The 1.4TSI in question is the 160PS version though, Howard was just commenting that even the lower power variant was a nicer drive than the TDI is, so (in his opinion) it's probably a given that the higher power one will be nicer too.

Just been talking with my a friend who has been telling me to go for a 3 Series like I originally planned because I'll miss the space in the Scirocco....or at least my pooch will..

Man, buying a new car is a headache, thought it should be fun :p

Popped the other two VW dealers I've been talking with (not my local one who I spoke with earlier) an email to try and get petrol test drives next weekend.

Yea good luck getting a dog in a 3 Series without it being a Touring.

I was looking at 3/5 touring's before I saw a Scirocco funnily enough :p

Did you manage to get anything organised? I still haven't/ can't get a drive in the 2.0 petrol, thinking of trying the engine in a golf to see how it compares.

Saw pics of the new beetle today as well, looks a lot more "chunky", sales guys were raving about it, apparently they spent three days out in Spain this week driving some of the variants.

Got a drive arranged for tomorrow although the salesman tried to ring me earlier but I was in a meeting. Will call him first thing, hopefully it's still on.

Fail

So I did the test drives........and in the end I bought a BMW 123d M Sport :p

I'd spent a fair bit of time considering a BMW but the mrs was against it (shes a VW fan :p). Was just doing a last minute browse on Friday evening and saw a 123d M Sport for 16.5k with all the toys, checked it out and drove it on Saturday and it was in perfect condition, FSH, warranty, all tyres recently changed.

So came home, did a load more research (I believe even in one thread on here Fox you described the 123d as having an excellent or very good good engnie :p), checked insurance, general running costs, and decided to go for the 123d over the Scirocco...So looking forward to getting it next Saturday.

I did want a Scirocco...I test drove three and was very close to purchasing one. Even after spotting the BMW I still test drove the 1.4 petrol but decided to keep my options open and check out the 123d as it was right next to my brothers place in London where I was heading yesterday anyway. Drove the 123d and preferred it to the Scirocco, interior/boot was also slightly more roomy which is a bonus for me, did some extensive research and decided to go for the 123d.
