I am going to India for 3 weeks, North India. Going in February.

Naturally I need to know some basic phrases in order to get me by as I will be back packing and will possibly end up in some remote area's.

So, what is the best audio thing that I can simply slap onto my ipod and play/word along to each morning and afternoon to and from work for the next 3 or so months?

Thanks!

3 months to learn a language? Impossible, pal.

Thanks for your input chap, but learn a language and grasp some basic phrases are 2 entirely different things...

To ask for a hostel, where to eat, how much, no thanks, yes please.

I'm not going to be singing Bohemian Rhapsody in Hindi out of my arse am I?

Never tried them, but Rosetta Stone?

Thanks chap, just stumbled accross this on a Hindi website :)

You could, I still think that it is a large major challenge to learn enough to get you by though. I learnt French for 8 years and I don't think I could ever get by with it, granted it was an English education system, 3 months is really pushing it.

They sell those in the Oracle on a little stand. ;)

Yes, they do. It's a very expensive option, but seems like it might work given enough time and effort. If there are any specific dialects involved, then make sure you get the right one - for example, they do Portuguese (Brazil), but not Portuguese (Portugal). Not much use to me as I'd want the latter.

Thanks guys, I will check it out tomorrow when I pop out for lunch :)

Also, will get a mate from work to teach me basic Hindi, as long as I can say thank you, no and yes please. I will be happy :)

Being polite costs nothing but produces rewards :)

Have a look at a website called Live Mocha.

Also, I was in India for the best part of six months last year. Bear in mind that, while Hindi will get you by in most places, many people a) speak English and b) speak their local dialect. Hindi isn't the national language by any stretch. While in Mumbai, for example, I heard considerably more Marathi than I did Hindi.

Yea, I did hear that there are many dialects and variations of Hindi it's self.

Hopefully it should be ok, did you speak the local languages or did you find it alright speaking English?

I just feel it a bit rude if I go there and didn't bother to learn any basic phrases. It's only polite to say thank you in their language, or at least try! lol.
