Anyone living in the UAE or Qatar?

Daily Mail reader? lol

Can't quite see the link between the daily mail and having an opposition to discrimination and persecution.

It's obviously sentationalist if not factually incorrect. "dark ages" and "contributing money is unethical" is clearly moronic.

On the contrary, providing tourism revenue only promotes the acceptability of and funds such unethical behaviour, though judging by your location I would expect you to have a somewhat clouded opinion. And yes such behaviour is reminiscent of the dark ages.

Judging on your location I would expect you to have no real informed information on the matter ;) Which is fine, everybody is free to draw their own conclusions.

Says it all really.

I dont get why there are so many posts here trying to promote anything good about this place, in reality its a wealthy hell hole built on the backs of slavery and inhumane practices.

Where to start...

I currently live in Abu Dhabi and have taken a few weekend trips to Dubai. Its funny how people form opinions off the back of tripe that’s to be read in papers and online publishing’s.

Now, I’m sure its not a perfect place... But from my opinion, which is based on my living arrangements for the past 6 months is this. Its a fantastic place to live! Premium prices for beer? DO I CARE? No. Because im sat in a air conditioned bar surrounded by fantastic architecture and beautifully diverse people. Not a rowdy bunch of chavs downing a bottle of bolt cider!

Its currently turning very cool during the day which means the beach is brilliant, the Cornish is fantastic and the whole place just seems happy.

People are safe here, Fuel is cheaper than water, and everyone has respect for each other.

Frankly, the western world could learn a thing of two from these guys.

The effort that goes into planting trees and grass is astonishing, you can see they have real pride for there country. Something that the UK has lost, I'm not even sure if we will ever really see it come back.

I would be happy to spend many years here, i really would.

I live in Dubai too, it's nice.
I was in Doha yesterday, it's got potential but pretty boring right now.

And to the Muslim haters

My dad just got a job there for a few years and i am going to Doha for two weeks in December, dubai for new years. If i like it there, i seriously might considering looking for job out there. I can go diving and swimming all the time. I realy miss swimming a lot and i like the hot weather. But 40 is too hot but this other guy i know said that all the buildings have air con, so you go from aircon building to air con car to another air con building etc. My dad also said the bars are full of Chinese takeaway and not the food either.

Yeah during July, August and some of september it's too hot and most people stay indoors, go home and visit their family and take holidays, IMO it's a small price to pay for 9 months of perfect weather. Also there's plenty to do even when it's hot, as you say you can go diving and also people do more things in the evenings to avoid the heat.
Yeah some bars have "Chinese takeaway" but not many!

A friend of mine grew up in Doha and generally loved it. The facilities were amazing and alcohol was available to anyone who wanted it.

However, you've got to remember that as a foreigner you have very little in the way of rights. Your employer can sack you without giving a reason and you can get kicked out of your apartment with zero notice.

But it is a fact that homosexuality is harshly punished over there? I don't think you can say that because he hasn't lived there it isn't true.

So in summary you are enjoying yourself in the facilities that were built using slave labour.

Fair enough, these places aren't the most ethical but they are slowly improving as they become more Westernised. It takes time much like it did in Western culture.

I'd get off your high horse though, I very much doubt you've never worn clothes or bought a product that was produced by slave labour at some point in your life.

Slave labour? Where? All I have seen is east Asians coming over voluntarily making some good money by their standards to send back home to their families.

The poor living standards, the long hours, the low wages, the expensive housing, and the removal of workers passports in the UAE are all pretty well documented. It's not quite slavery in the traditional sense, but there isn't any doubt that something akin to it is going on. People are being exploitated so that we can build so much, so quickly.

Would that put me off going there? No. I used to live there, and my father has said that me and him moving back to the UK was a terrible idea with hindsight.

I don't see why the west does not just take over qatar and dubai. IT would be a good place for an american military base because it is right next to iran and next to their friends in the UAE. It would be great if they just implemented full western laws and stopped messing around. They have no problem occupying and taking over all the other countries in the region, why not takeover these two countries and implement sensible laws, then import loads of western girls and we can have beach parties etc.

While I agree with your sentiment I think it's quite objectionable when you hear people singing the praises of the middle east for all the things that happen thanks to the appalling worker's rights over there - it's especially galling to hear things like "the West could learn a thing or two from the middle east". This touches on one of the biggest cons for me of living in the middle east - the ex-pat community, which has more than its fair share of utter **** than average. Terms like "Chinese takeaway" to describe what is probably forced prostitution is a good indication of what sort of people some of these ex-pats are - hey, who cares though when you can get cheap hookers and the women take more care about their appearance than lazy, British prostitutes.

What about the unscrupulous employers who confiscate their passports and then don't pay them what they promised? This was certainly going on a few years back, have they done anything to address that? I think it was illegal in Dubai, but in these places the law is kind of optional in certain regards - it wouldn't surprise me if they have sorted it out now though due to the amount of bad press they were getting.

WTF! You're an idiot.
1) Dubai is a city and state inside the UAE
2) Qatar is also an ex-british colony and already friends with the UK
3) what makes you think you have the right to say 'full western laws' are right
4) there are already 'loads of western girls' and beach parties in the UAE

lol, cheers. Got in before me! :p

I was just joking. but it would be nice if they just stopped all the non sense and allowed for the qatar and dubai to be fully westernised and independent from the UAE.

you still make no sense
Qatar is already fully independent from the UAE aside from being in the GCC
Dubai is founding member of the UAE and likes it that way.
What makes you think that the middle east wants to be 'westernised' not every country idolizes the west

Go away and do some research. Come back when you have intelligent questions.
