8600gt 512mb DDR2 for Physx? Worth it?

Thanks! That's what I was after, I am not sure if it is working however. I can't launch the Nvidia control panel. I got a CPU score of 8298 in 3Dmark Vantage though, No idea if that says it is or it isn't.

Overall: P5054
GPU: 4472 HD3870 512mb
CPU: 8298 PhenomII 940/8600GT

What seems right?

Well my second run with the 8600GT disabled in Device Manager came out with the following...

Overall: P5223
GPU: 4486 HD3870 512mb
CPU: 10288 PhenomII 940

So I guess in that's a bit of a fail :(

Thanks for the link I'll have a look :)

Ahhh yeah, saw that vid a while back. It is comparing only Nvidea cards though, know of anything doing card vs CPU? I'm actually really surprised that my PII at only 3.2ghz actually scored higher than the 8600GT. I may run the tests again. to rule out erroneous results.

Okay, I don't think PhysX is actually running on this system, GPU-Z has the PhysX box unchecked and I see no option in the Nvidea control panel that would let me activate it. the closest setting being to enable Cuda, which it states includes PhysX but I don't see the menus that other people are displaying while Googling.

What am I doing wrong?

You've installed the AMD and nVidia drivers installed, and you've run the Hybrid PhysX mod from the link in the thread?

Have you gone into the "Extras" directory of the Hybrid Mod and set nvsvc to automatic, and set acceleration to GPU by running the two script files? And have you rebooted?

My machine crashed when I stuck the latest nVidia drivers on, I went back to the 260.99 drivers, though, which I had installed a few months ago before I took out my 8800GT for my HTPC (I've since been given a GTX260 which has gone back in for PhysX)

What games do you have available to test with? Metro 2033, Batman: Arkham Asylum and Mafia 2 all will give you benchmarks and show PhysX working.

I got around it (i think) in the end by disabling the ati card, then the nvidea physx option opens in control panel. then re enabled, gpuz now has Physx checked. I'll do some more testing tomorrow but i don't see much of any change in the quick runs i did.

Oh my games are old, I'll get some new ones when i get my 7 series card, I only have UT3 that has any kind of PhysX ability :(

any investment of any sort in physx is a waste.
Well, people would spend extra £50-£60 for the extra 1GB VRAM despite it won't make any difference in 95% of the games at 1920 res; but getting a 9800GT for £25-£35 not only offer the option to put in and play with PhysX when playing games that support it, take it out when done playing them...but it is also a good backup card which people can fall back to should their main card ever need to be rma :p

Okay I now think that I haven't got this working at all. I currently have AMD Cat 11.10 installed and Nvidia 285.62. With the Hybrid-PhysX-mod-1.05ff and the extras scrips installed, many restarts and tried a few other variables, secondary monitor output to the 8600 etc

I am testing with 3Dmark Vantage, specifically "CPU Test 2 // PHYSICS" and I see no GPU utilization in GPU-Z on the 8600GT, I can see my CPU being hammered in AMD Overdrive though.

Any Ideas?

Try a game, rather than 3DMark (which, IIRC, doesn't support GPU PhysX...)

Get the Batman: Arkham Asylum demo, that support PhysX :)

Cheers, I did run fluidmark however and that came up with no GPU PhysX either. I'll try the game though but I think I'll just uninstall and reinstall everything if I get a chance tonight :)
