Why Is China Building These Gigantic Structures In the Middle of the Desert?

The ones with cyan colors or whatever are compositing issues - it happened on some street view plates to. So that makes the runways somewhat normal :D

I'm more interested in how they are doing it rather than why. Maybe the technology can be used for good.

How do you think they might be doing it? Lasers? Teleportation machines?

They kind of look like they were made with...well you know...dozers and cement. And maybe a few thousand peasants with shovels :p.

Looks odd, the colours have gone funny on the map tiles but when you zoom in between the facility there and the lake, there are weird shapes all over the ground.

Looks like they've built some rather massive canals there, with some epic water tanks perhaps, maybe an effort to try and make some areas of desert habitable? Wouldn't be too far fetched given China's massive population problems.

They are salt pans. Let water drain into the large structure and then wait for it to evaporate. Collect the salt and sell it to Tesco...:)
