Why Is China Building These Gigantic Structures In the Middle of the Desert?

its the docks for those big ship/subs they are going to build, the credit crunch was a lie it was to fund these sub/ship/docks. 2012 next year in it!

Looks odd, the colours have gone funny on the map tiles but when you zoom in between the facility there and the lake, there are weird shapes all over the ground.

Looks like they've built some rather massive canals there, with some epic water tanks perhaps, maybe an effort to try and make some areas of desert habitable? Wouldn't be too far fetched given China's massive population problems.

They have massive new cities and quarters built in cities that hole millions. One was built with 5million in mind, including the largest mall in the world (think it's out ranked now). But like our poor and first time buyers no-one can afford them and the Chinese government won't admit there's a problem or subsidise rent/morgages. As such the countries overcrowding alleys ways are still being overcrowded and more so everday as more "slums" are demolished to make way for more expensive unused tower blocks.
In short, they could be trying to make them habitable but it won't happen due to the already large amount of unused housing. It could still be early works for them though.

Pools of water, giant tracks, huge metal pipe structures, desert... Perhaps they are trying to make the desert fertile somehow?
