Footballers Wages

Not sure why footballers are always singled out. Why not golfers? or tennis players? or formula 1 drivers?

They are paid the going rate in their market and the top paid ones are the best in the world at what they do - The majority of professional footballers are not paid mega bucks considering their career lasts for 10-15 years but people always concentrate on the top earners.

There are roughly around 4500 professional footballers in England - not many really and wages below the championship are not exatly amazing given career length.

The top players are the best in the world at what they do - they deserve what they get paid. The same as the best performing individuals in any market get paid megabucks.

People who say doctors or police should get paid the same are living in a dream world and don't understand how these things work if they think that's actually possible.

If the clubs are getting paid a billion pound a year in sponsorship and everything else I have no issue at all with players taking their slice. If you want players wages to come down you must want licensing and sponsorship money to also come down. If not then nothing will change.

Do I think they are worthy of that kind of money? no, I think they would all happily do exactly the same job on 20k a week if that was the same everywhere else. I would love to see that money being given to nurses and those in the services instead. However, since no corporation wants to pay the NHS 1.4 Billion pounds for 2 years of live operations, it isn't going to happen.

And as others have said, a lot of it is also being paid in tax which I'd love to see as a % of all the income tax paid in this country.

They are all overpaid for what they do.

Give footballers wages to our Troops fighting out in Afgan/Iraq.

Have to disagree I'm afraid. I'm willing to spend my money on watching football as I enjoy doing so. I'm not prepared to spend any of my money on war.

At the end of the day as it's been stated, they probably don't deserve that much money.

But the business they are in can pay them that, tv rights, tickets, merchandise, sponsorships.... if they didn't get the big bucks then someone else would.

They don't deserve it, they don't need it, most of them don't know what to do with it but this doesn't change the fact that they operate in a free market and the market has placed a certain level of value on the skills they have.

In an ideal world a nurse would earn more for saving a life than Wayne Rooney would earn for kicking a ball but in the real world a nurse costs money wheres Wayne Rooney generates millions for shareholders.

Probably a handful of Premiership Footballers earn more in a week than I earned this year. My views on this are that if that is what they earn then good luck to them, I am not paying their wages, they are not employed by the state and if they generate the revenue then they deserve it.

Silly thread is silly. Actors, singers, footballers, tennis players, golfers, all paid what they are because of supply and demand.

+1

they deserve the money, because their is a demand for their talent and people are willing to pay a premium for that talent.

if people think they don't deserve it, then why dont you try doing what they do, oh wait you can't.
