Hi guys

I'm thinking of turning to the dark side and selling my AMD cpu/mobo (in sig). I've been with AMD since 98 and i've never owned an Intel PC so go easy on me :D
I waited and waited for AMD Bulldozer and it turned out to be rubbish.... so ive decided to have a look at Intel for my next upgrade fix.... (sorry AMD, why do I feel like im about to cheat on you?

I have a few Questions tho...

Will I need to reformat my SSD if I change to maybe an Asrock Ex4 Gen3 + 2500k combo? (I hope not cos downloading BF3 and Rage again = painful.) I also have Windows7 Home premium 64bit... will that cause me any problems?

Is 4GB Kingston HyperX memory ok? I have it set at 1866mhz at the mo

Will I actually notice that much of a difference in gaming coming from a Crosshair V & 955 @ 4.2?

Is the 2500K/Z68 combo old tech now with Sandybridge-E just out and Ivy Bridge around the corner?

Thanks all!

The only thing to suggest selling your cpu and mobo right now is their reseale value can only go down from now on in.

As for reinstalling games etc, repartition your SSD and keep data on one partition and your operating system on a smaller partition, that way you can reinstall your OS to your heart is content without losing any data.

Failing that you can look into making a backup image of your entire SSD.

Memory will be fine.

I agree with stulid, i can't believe you've noticed anything that made you think that a 4.2GHz 955 wasn't fast enough for you.

I guess the main reason is because I was playing BF3/Rage and noticed my fps only around 35/40 @ 1080p x2 x4 even tho my 6970 was upto 980mhz and 955 @4.2. I have some extra time and money (bedside table piggy bank full up of gold coins :D) and wanted to squeeze some extra speed/fps out of my PC... I'm still not convinced with going down the xfire route tho and it would mean buying new power supply too.

Anyway, thanks for ya honest answers.

if you do decide to change, just don't get asrock ;)

Sarcasm?... What's wrong with Asrock...

I was quite shocked with the game really, as in regarding heat. Crysis 2 hammers my GPU's more than BF3. After an hour or so BF3 has my CPU about 37/38c, GPU's 55/58c, 40-45% GPU fan speed.
Crysis 2 hits the CPU about 38/40c, GPU's 65-70c, 55-70% GPU fan speed.

... anyway back on topic :p

Would it be a wise move, any one else have any thoughts?!

I could sell my 6970 and try a GTX580?

BF3, Rage, Crysis 2

Crap = not good or terrible when i have a 6970 and getting 35/45 fps in BF3

Nothing wrong with them apart from a few people damaging their CPU socket from not being careful or like any product you get the odd bad one. Also Asrock has sold a lot of motherboards especially the Gen3 boards and with that many sold you will always get a small percentage of people with either a bad production board or just not knowing how to use them correctly.

I have the Asrock Z68 Pro Gen3, best board I have owned in a long time, not a single problem and performance is fantastic. I always owned Asus boards for my home builds and this board I own now is better then any ASUS Z68 apart from the Asus Maximus IV Extreme-Z Intel Z68 but that is not Gen3 ready and has less SATA ports, no IDE or Floppy support, the backplate I/O has no Video out options on a Z68 board and also the recent addition of the famous Asus multi reboot if you overclock the cpu (when you start the pc up it restarts a few times so it can set the overclocks, not sure why they have added this silly feature and not done what other companies do and boot once as normal). So to me it was clear which motherboard to buy after reading up on the Asus Maximus IV Extreme-Z Intel Z68, too many disadvantages this time round with ASUS's top line boards for the Z68 platform.

hmm not knowing how to use it? really? only 1 way the CPU goes into the socket, what else is there to know how to use it? and I sure as hell drop anything into the socket as the rma guy said I must have done to bend the pins, nice cs by the way calling customers liars.

You can decide from these if your system is running correctly with the 6970 you have, there is also some CPU tests on some of the games there.

fowler002 stop it, it is getting silly mate now with every thread that mentions any Asrock product you add your point of don't buy with reasons that are personal to you (you are behaving like the Hardocp review people here, testing a faulty board and knowing it was faulty and writing it off, even after the manufacturer told them to get it replaced and it was faulty), yes we know you are upset with your board that is broken, but does not mean everyones board is or will be broken too and how do we know you didn't cause the damage to the socket ? We have to just take your word mate. Also get yours sent for RMA to Asrock mate as many of us have told you how, simple send it to them and they will then send you a new board then i'm sure you will be over the moon. Don't write off any company based on one item you received damaged and you have not even got round to sending it back for a new replacement. Would you write of Rolls Royce if they sent you a Phantom that had a serious fault on it ? No you would ask them to replace or repair it and all will be good.

only 1 way the CPU goes into the socket.

Only 1 correct way ;)

GTX580's are great cards, mine runs BF3 @ 1920 x 1200 on ultra at ~60fps. But personally I wouldn't bother, there are much better cards just around the corner from both AMD and Nvidia. Just tolerate what you have and wait a few months, either the prices for the 580 will drop or you'll be able to get one of the new cards that is much faster. Win-win really.

I do like win-win.

It gives me the ***** when i spend lots of time and money on a PC build and then im not 100% satisfied. I was thinking is a Phenom II a bit long in the tooth now. I was hoping to move to Bulldozer but that aint gonna happen anytime soon (maybe im just subconsciously ****** off with AMD?)
