in the instance that the main character gets betrayed by people close to him or her. i'm thinking of the films matchstick men and butterfly on a wheel as examples of this. i enjoy this kind of thing for some reason. i realise that by asking this that i am leaving myself wide open for a spoiler but i like the events that lead up to these scenarios.

The Game. One of those films I wish I could erase from my memory and watch afresh.

Unknown - not a great movie tho watchable enough, but not a bad twist, definitely have to be really clued on to spot it coming.

EDIT: Should say I was referring to the 2011 movie by this name, but the 2006 one mentioned below is prolly worth a look to.

Unknown (2006) -there are loads of films called unknown, make sure it's this one!

Memento - very thought provoking, there's no true answer as to who the killer is.
Identity
Prestige

Insomnia -doesn't really fit the same description as the above films, but it's a similar type of film and is really good

Deff add my recommendations for Prestige & Usual Suspects as listed already.

And will add in:

The Good The Bad The Weird
This is my favorite film, bar none and although you wouldn't expect it, there is a great twist.

Leon
It's not a twist in the sense you mention...but it's still a 'damn, I didn't think that would happen moment'

Ronin
I would say this has a twist along the lines of what you're looking for - although not majorly

Naturally, I can't think of much when required to. I'm sure I watched a film in the last few months which had an amazing twist I certainly never seen coming but can not remember what it was. I'll have a think...

I don't care what anyone says, regardless of some occasionally hammy acting, Saw has the best twist (as well as several other mini twists that are great) of any film and I will fight anyone to death who says otherwise!

Everyone I watched it with was simply - ' nooo waaaaay'

Found Saw to be mediocre at best.

Regardless of what you thought of the film as a whole, the twists (well, the last one) are epic.

And I would still argue it's a great film anyway :)

Well I wont spoil it for anyone that hasn't seen it, but the last twist for me was just so implausable and unbelievable that it made a mockery of the whole thing. Usually I'm pretty good at suspending disbelief for films (I enjoy some really rubbish films), but that just went too far for me. The film put me off watching the follow ups that were made, although one day I might go back and try again.
