I put a car stereo for sale on TalkAudio as I didn't want the hassle of Ebay, it's been on there for a while without interest and suddenly this chap comes up and says he wants to buy it. He's got no posts on there, but of course assures me his intentions are good. He's offered to pay with paypal but I've heard too many horror stories? Should I pass up on a potential sale? Not sure what to do really.

It's difficult to tell, I'm not sure I would necessarily instantly say it's dodgy, I have sold stuff on many other forums with no problems to guys who seem to register just to buy something that is in classifieds. In fact I have done so myself as a buyer to get certain items.

I'd probably ask if he can bank transfer the money to you and gauge his reaction

You have to also bear in mind that in many Euro countries, items like car audio can be very expensive compared to the UK, which is why he may be asking you

Personally I wouldn't feel comfortable giving my bank details to a stranger from another country with no posts.
I dont know how to do "ID theft" but we are always being told all they need is your bank statement. ie. name address and bank details.

all they need is your name and town, no bank stuff needed... just a BT phone book.
I used to work for a credit card company in the fraud and id theft dept so rest assured my sources are 100% lol

In which case, if someone wanted to do me over, they could do easily? I've given bank details out before, am I really that vulnerable if I pass them to him?

Either that or PayPal Gift?
I thought there's still an element of concern even with Gift?

i wanted to purchase an air rifle and just joined a forum for the sole purpose.

the dude would only accept bank transfer, which i could understand.

is it some hard to get hold of stereo, to attract a european buyer? and what sort of money are we talking about?

my details have been used fraudulently a few times. petrol station scams.

so i am very cautious.

I've made a couple of similar sales to people in Portugal on other classifieds, albeit much lower value items, and they went fine.

I wouldn't sell via normal Paypal, but I think you're OK if it's received as "Gift".

my mate had this scam done to him before

he put stereo up for sale,
buyer pays with a hacked paypal account,
tell him to ship to another address rather than the paypal address
then paypal account holder noticed account been hacked
payment reversed
no stereo, no money

of cos it was stupid to fall for it but there you go, just becarefull
