@40 minutes onwards, they are stopping people from going down a public street, also demanding ID for some people to prove they work on the street. They are even discriminating visually, some people are not being asked for ID which is clearly shown in the video..
Regardless of what you think about the occupy protests, how are they allowed to do this?

They're the police. They have to make quick judgements to assess risk.

I'm not going to watch the video, but unless it's obvious racial or sexual profiling, then there's nothing anyone can do about it.

It's not illegal to profile people based on how likely you think they are to be irritating hippies who wish to blame everyone else for everything.

True, but I can't see how they can close a public street just to stop protests.

Based on what? Your detailed knowledge of American law?

Or just guesswork like 90% of the other opinions going round lately?

The latter :D, If they can close streets for protests that just defies common sense as the constitution enables them to have the right to peacefully protest.

Missed the first amendment did you?

Free speech? What's that got to do with peaceful protest?

Free speech is used to defend anything everything, on the basis that anything you do is your free expression. I'm not sure things are supposed to work quite that broadly.

Congress shall make no law … abridging … the right of the people peaceably to assemble
It does say it, it's quite well known that the Church of Scientology has not been able to close public streets when they have wanted to.

He means the right to peacably assemble.

One of the city laws individuals keep getting arrested for is you can't "parade" in the roadway without the "parade" being issued a parade permit.

Any government will crack down when threatened, the only reason Western governments have had it so comfortable all these years is the high standard of living, welfare for the poor and good use/dominance of the media.

I'm not sure it dictates the location - tis fairly normal for police to stop protests going down certain routes. Should the orange men in Norther Ireland be able to go down any road in any Catholic Neighbourhood?

Tis probably quite sensible to stop a mob of crusties who are targeting banks etc.. from actually getting too close to the banks. Obviously people who work at those banks still need to get through so some discrimination is necessary, its not unfair discrimination - its not like they're not letting through blacks etc... they're stopping hippies and letting through suits...
