thats what im talking about when i say faceplate.

the actual card itself is the same size as my gtx285 so i thought it would be ok but this cards face plate is ongoing past the edge of the card. its a long metal extension which makes it too big for my case.

what should i do with it? take it off completely leaving the card bare on the underside or saw the metal extension off, because im sure its just for show and doesnt really do anything. its like a thin metal wing or something that extends out from under the card making it a gigantic sized graphics card

the measurements of the card were sufficient to fit in my case length wise, but theres that metal thing sticking out which is not added to the measurements on the website, it adds about 2 inches to the total length

I would imagine its helping to hold the cooling shroud on and the length of the screws are correct for the backplate/pcb and into the shroud.

LEave it one. It's only 2-3 mm thick. Why would you want to remove it?

Stops the card from sagging and it also knocks a degree or two of some card temps

Not sure what you mean, does it look like the bottom card from this picture? (Just wondering as you say you can't see what you're referring to in the picture you posted)

The backplate was put on to help suck more air in to the batmobile vents as to draw higher airflow through the whole card in order to cool down the vrms, as they run very, very hot!

it would be cool to keep it on, but then it wouldnt be in my PC it would be in a box because it doesnt fit in my case lengthwise like i said,

not sure if anyone reads the actual post before they write an answer for the title

yes like that KILLER UK, but worse, heres a photo of mine.

the measurements of the card were sufficient to fit in my case length wise, but theres that metal thing sticking out which is not added to the measurements on the website, it adds about 2 inches to the total length

its too big inside my case because the HDD rack is stopping it fitting in, because of that long metal appendage its crapping out

should i take the bottom plate off or use a saw to take that metal end off, either that or re-sell the card which i dont really want to do

sorry about the size of the photo,

Never seen one of those before. I assume the handle is all part of the backplate?

99% certain the memory on these cards is all on the front, and the backplate doesn't actually touch any of the card. The backplate however holds the cooler on (apart from the cross brace behind the GPU)

Does the card have any warranty, did you buy it second hand? If so, and you don't want to sell it, the only option would be to cut if off. Of course any warranty would be invalidated.

P.S. You could have course buy a third party cooler as well, but that would still involve removing the stock heatsink.

Are you sure that 5870 is not for an Apple Mac ? The only time I have seen the 5870 come with that is for the Apple Macs. Have you installed it and tried it to make sure it even works on a Windows PC ?

I did hear of people buying the Windows PC (IBM compatible) version and flashing the Firmaware so it would work on an Apple Mac, so i'm guessing if this person had it in a Windows PC he must have flashed the Firmware back to a PC cards Firmware. That type of 5870 I have only ever seen for the Apple Macs, so I would get it tested on an Windows PC if I was you, some people on ebay and such sites say PC compatible and mean personal computer which can mean any computer on the market even the Apple Mac.

UPDATE:

i sawed that sucker right off. took a hand saw to it, took about an hour of stopping starting of course.

and now it fits like a glove, perfect fit.

yeh it works fine, i did buy it off ebay, and yeh i couldnt find any photos of this kind of bracket thing, its insane that they put stuff like that on there, its only for show so it looks buff, but when its in the case nobody can see the dam thing

Never saw these before. But you shouldnt of cut it off. You coulda bought another one, then replaced it. Then sold that one to a mac user. You would have made money of it !
