Hi all,

I have recently set up a basic media centre and was wondering whether my on-board ATI X1600 (With 512MB of shared RAM) supports Hardware Acceleration .

I am using XBMC and am having stuttering issues with .mkv 720p files.

I don't really want to buy a GFX card if I don't need to (spent sooo much money on my main rig)

If you have hardware acceleration enabled and it is still lagging then you will need a graphics card... onboard gpu's are usually crap and rely on a lot of processing power from the cpu and use a lot of memory especially for HD... minimum spec for HD video is around 2ghz dual core and 2gb ddr2 800mhz memory.

what are you specs for the media centre?

and even a ati hd5450 for around £25 (low profile version) will give ten times better performance than onboard gpus and run hd nicely with a hdmi port on the card xD

ATI's UVD (Video decoder ASIC) wasn't introduced til the 2**** series. You'll want something like a 5450, 6450 or GT210/430/520 as a decoder card.

Long and short of it is though, the onboard setup is too old and doesn't have the hardware you need.
