I am getting increasing frustrated at the clear bias in favour of Apple, almost all the media outlets seem to be using the term "ipad rival".
This article is a perfect example of this shady journalism practice.
Why do they do it?

iPad is the one to beat, so of course it's used as the measuring stick.
It makes perfect sense, but some of you just can't handle that fact, due to some irrational hatred towards apple. Yeah we get you don't like apple. But it's still the device to beat and as such the device that all others will be compared to.

And that article is a great one to show why it is used as a comparison.

Obligatory haters going to hate.

No different to pc os all being compared to windows.
Or android phones being compared to the sgs2

because its all hipster douchebags that end up in the media and they are all loyal applie fanboys.

you would think apple invented computers , tablets , notebooks , laptops , personal music players etc.

But it's still the device to beat and as such the device that all others will be compared to.
is it really? or is it just the one that sells the most.

that's one and the same thing. Companies are going after market. However it's not just that the iPad sells more. It is generally regarded as the better option by many people. Also as the op article says, others have tried and withdrawn.

I'm very interested in the Nokia will release a tablet by June, does this mean we'll get windows 8 before the expected autum. Why is it so long away I won't windows tablet.

Agreed, I could list all the reasons why someone might say the opposite, price and specifications might be part of the reason. Again if you look at that article I can't help feel that they cherry picked an old Android tablet which is effectively a useless comparison.

Your personal requirements don't mean a lot, people have different requirements. But comma is care about market share and what is considered by the industry as being regarded overall as the best device. That is the iPad and you can't argue that.
You can easily argue from a personal view others are better, but from a market view the iPad is the leader.

Again the failure of attempts by other companies is very much down to how congested the Android market is, it's hardly to do with Apple.

And you are saying that the iPad is generally regarded as the better option, those people who are saying that are probably part of the problem by giving such a bias in favour of Apple.

Both are irrelevant to such a debate, the reason is meaningless.
It both out sells and is considered the better platform. The reason doesn't really matter.

Irrespective of whether the iPad is the market leader, do you not think that it is still highly bias by referring to the rest as rivals? It kind of implies that the Ipad is the better product and the rest are lower down. Same goes for companies using the term "Windows rivals", I think it is bad journalism and they should use neutral terminology.

No, of course they are rivals. What else are they?
It is, especially when talking about market share and the future. Which is exactly what that article is about.

I think the biggest problem with android on tablets.
Is two fold, tablets are still fairly niche and when they become as main stream as smartphones, they will have the market lead, albeit only due to a price range which covers all markets, rather just the very top end of the market. The other problem is music and films, they have no iTunes rival(the shop not the software) for people on this forum that doesn't matter, illegal downloads or ripping. But for a media device, it's pretty darn important. Now they have just released google music which solves the music, but still no films and even when a film purchase is released. Will you be able to play them on windows and osx or will like it's been so far only on android platform.

The other big thing with apple, which I don't think windows or android will ever beat :(, is accessories. The docks the gadgets the clocks. Even the majority of hotels now have iPhone/iPod speaker docks in the rooms. Which is a shame as I will miss that when I move to windows phone&tablet.

Yes they are rivals, but do you not think it is bias by always using the iPad as the reference point?
It's shoddy journalism at best, they could just use neutral terminology but they never do.

Apple kick started the modern smartphone market with the iPhone, therefore the search was on for an 'iPhone killer', and it was found to a lesser extent with the HTC Desire.

The same has happened with the tablet market, Apple started it, there was no tablet market at all until the iPad came along, and the iPad is still the best overall tablet, therefore it's the tablet to beat.

It's very simple, the press just occasionally put it in somewhat sensationalist terms, but here they really haven't.

Anyway, The Guardian is VERY heavily Apple-biased, so it's a terribly poor source.

Rival
Verb:
Compete for superiority with; be or seem to be equal or comparable to.

Seems like a good word
