Best petrol engine over the last 50 years??

BMW S54b32. 107bhp/l, naturally aspirated, 8,000rpm and economy isn't that shocking either.

Last incarnation of a long line of legendary straight sixes.

last of the "big" sixes?

edit according to wiki its m50 based :( thought it was m30

SR20DET - hella reliable and hella powerful .

Also RB26DETT for sheer cool value :cool:.

Completely agree.

The SR20DE is an amazing engine. I sort of miss mine from my Primera GT. The SR20 block is bulletproof. The SR20VE (the VVL version) is in my mind better then the 2ltr Honda equivilant. Maybe even better then the H22 from my Accord.

Not to forget of course the Tubro'd SR20DET that is still very famous in drifting.

I couldn't think of one really. People are still using Pintos and Crossflows and K-Series today, and others that stand out are the 205 GTi XU5J/XU9JA and the Mi16 engine. Oh and of-course our VTEC loving friends have the F20C .

Always rated vauxhalls c20xe 156bhp n/a in a mass produced engine in the mid eighties

XE is a good shout :). People are still using them these days, and can get upto 290BHP out of the N/A 2.0L .

So many choices but my choice would be the Rover 3.5L V8 for design and reliability followed by the Vauxhall C20XE (just fitted one to a Caterham, from a 140hp pinto we've jumped to 200hp, should be fun!)

Either that or the venerable rover v8 ended up being so versatile in so many differing applications

If only Vauxhall still produced engines like that, such a great engine.

Sorry, I'd have to disagree. The Buick motor's alright but it's nothing special. It's also prone to eating its own cam, taking out headgaskets or - in the case of larger displacement versions - dropping cylinder liners.

That's not to say that you can't build powerful ones, but they're costly to tune and very limited in terms of output.

A good engine, not a great one.
