When is the best time to book flights to America?

You can fly cheap direct to Seattle from Santa Barbara airport - fly into LAX, drive up to Santa Barbara and spend a couple days there then hop up to Seattle

Do the same on the reverse, simples!

I'm going back to the UK next June for absolutely nothing related to the Olympics, sucks as I'm invariably going to get bummed bigtime on the fares :p The only saving grace is at least I have enough airmiles for a free companion flight on VA :p

Only the once, wife and I cashed our miles and got a free companion ticket - is there something I missed? :p

Obviously you have to pay for a full price fare and taxes etc so the benefit isn't that great for a regular seat but for a companion PE seat it works out at a decent saving.

never found it cheaper than booking 2 discounted tickets if they have any availability at all

Those "free" companion tickets are a con. The plus side is that if you book a Y/B fare you have a pretty good chance of getting upgraded a cabin, especially if economy is oversold.

Yeah tbh I think we'll probably end up getting 2 x Economy tickets and upgrading them both to PE using miles.

For us our flight times etc tended to be at peak dates and days and sometimes at relatively short notice so there often weren't many discounted fares available that worked for us and so those 'offers' tended to work out - but yes I agree that a lot of the time you may as well get 2 x discounted fares, not to mention that you get the miles too.

Couple of years ago went with Continental Airline,

Birmingham (UK) > Newark NYC, LaGuardia (NYC) > Belize City (Via Houston) and Cancun > Birmingham (UK)

for just over £500, booked in Oct/Nov I think and travelled the following May.

*edit*

Don't ask how we got from Belize to Cancun!:D

Had to book a flight to regon for just poast Christmas recently. When I first looked in September prices were £400, in October they went up to £550, and when I booked last week they were £750. I could have waited to see if they dropped but the trend wasn't promising, it warned there were only 2 seats left at that price and it was critical to flight out on the exact day. After booking the prices went up to £800. Just checkd now and the prices are £920. So let this be a warning that waiting can very definitely be a very bad thing!

Luckilly I wont have to pay for the ticket but my girlfriend does. I would have booked earlier but there were a huge number of unknowns in the timing and a lot of uncertainity.
