Dell XPS 15z

The laptop packed up again, starting to refuse to power on after going to sleep/hibernate.

After a few emails with Dell, I'm getting a full refund, which I am very impressed with, as I've had the system for over 4 months. Then again, I didn't expect it to fail so often!

I've got my eyes on a 13" Mac Air now, will probably go for one of them and then get a new MBP once the new design is released.

The 13" MBA is very nice, and surprisingly fast I found, I guess the SSD helps here. :)

Nothing yet, still using my old HP Laptop, which does the job just fine for now.

But I think I'll either get an Asus Zenbook or a Mac Air.

Contra the guy who said Dell used to make things properly: not in my experience. My first Dell laptop was way back in about 2002, and that got crazy hot too. Every one since has had at least one considerable build quality issue. Dell tempt you with a feature set that looks perfect but unfortunately the laptops are poorly made.

I've owned one ASUS and it seemed quite good but the speakers were weedy so I didn't have it long. Samsung/ASUS are probably mid-range quality wise, with Toshiba upper mid range and Lenovo the best I've seen so far.

If you can get something from either of the last two brands, you may save yourself some self-inflicted baldness. Of the others I would probably take ASUS over Samsung because of their good rep in computer components and the fact that they're still trying to establish a name in laptops, so you get more for your money.

I do like the look of some of the business models but sadly after this experience I'll never get a Dell laptop again.

I might just bite the bullet and get a Mac Air, I know it will be well made, I can get the 13" 128GB i5 model from the student store thanks to the GF with 3 years Apple care for £993.60.

That's a nice discount.

Feel free to try one in a shop, often you can't tell how well made something is until you actually get your hands on it. :)

I've had a play in PC World and I like the look/feel of it, very solid and very simple unlike a lot of cheaper laptops. I've never really used the OS so it'll be cool to learn something new and I can practice my unix/linux command line stuff as well.

I'm not going into an Apple store unless I have to.

Thinking of getting a 14z but only because of Quidco discount (15% off and 10% cashback). Other than that it's between the Zenbook, IdeaPad and Samsung 9.

My laptop's that just died was an XPS. Lasted me a good 4 years of solid and hard use. You'll always get people who've had bad experiences (you) so that doesn't really put me off.

Also, not sure if you got this as it wasn't offered a week or so ago but they're giving 1 year of next working day call out support for free at the moment.

I had mine for 4 months, and had an engineer out 3 times I think.

Go read the Dell forums and you will find the same from other users.

The 14/15z series is a flop.

The standard XPS laptops that I have used in various stores feel a lot more solid. Heck, even the Dell engineers that came to visit said that the XPS 14/15z have been causing all sorts of issues and the normal XPS laptops are far more reliable.

Forgive my ridiculously biased point of view.

I've finally got round to replacing the 15z with a MacBook Pro 13".

The differences in quality are massive, so glad I bought one.

Not overly keen on OS X so far though, but I've barely used it, and I could always just put Windows 7 on it if I don't like it in a few months or whatever time.

Thanks god I got rid of that Dell!
