wondering whats the kindest thing i can do for my 11 year old primera turbo diesel with 100,000 on the clock.
So i know i can buy fancy pants fully synthetic oil at 0-50 but i have often heard older engines are better off with 15-40. So that leaves me with semi synthetic Mobil Super 2000 as number one option. So can some mechanic or high end diy'er tell me if this is the best i can do for her? or go for something better?

why use the cheapest? im looking after this car to get the best out of it i can. That does not mean cheapest. Cheapest means less mpg and increased wear on the engine. Better oils have better additives that help with other aspects of the engine. So the question really is, if anyone knows, for an older engine what is the best i can use in this engine?

Whilst what you say is probably correct, I would say that the likes of Castrol and Mobil are pretty much the same as the cheaper stuff, but in a fancy container with a significant price increase.

My advice would be feel free to buy cheaper oil, just make sure you add the correct quantity, type and at the correct service intervals, always with a new oil filter.

The Haynes for my Micra says use 15-40 but I have always used 10-40. The bloke at the car parts place (A-Z spared in Stoke) seemed to know what he was on about and said no cars really use 15-40, just stick 10-40 in. Never had any issues.

because you're in danger of spending more on an oil change than the car's value:p

Ive done that with looking after my old golf. It looked after me till 234k miles so far, so it depends on what you want from the car I suppose

it's eleven years old and has done over one hundred thousand miles.
Now is not the time to be worrying what oil it should have in it.
Just make sure it has "some" oil in it and you're good to go.

Look up the specs of oil it should meet and follow them

the reason for lower spec oil for older engines is that they will have more wear and tear, in other words the contact points are not as smooth as a new engine and thus a thin (higher spec) oil is providing less protection at the points of wear and tear.
