Do you have to travel with work?

Accepted a job back in consulting, so no doubt travel will feature, how much i'm not sure. It's not ideal, as i have a young family, and as has been said, most travel involves ****** hotels, and ****** commutes..for example, I can let you know the Quality hotel in Chorley isn't.
Still, the job itself is a great one, it's a payrise - which is nice - and i'm hoping it will lead me into other avenues of work.

I travel for work, usually longer term though. I prefer doing longer term assignments because of the money aspect. I hate business trips; being away from home and living out of a suitcase and not getting any financial gain or getting much time to see your surroundings, no thanks. I also hate flying now, take about 6 flights a month on average.

Wow you guys stay away from home a lot. Just out of curiosity, what type of job requires you lot to be away for so long and even though your away the money you get paid will be very good?

This week:

Barking, Basildon, Enfield, Milton Keynes.

Next week:

Bradford. Almost cannot wait :p

I work on an oil rig so I'm away for half the year. Been working in Egypt for most of the last 5 years. Can be a bit of a pain but I like my job and the time off is great.

I travel a lot for work all over the UK and occasionally to Dublin. I have also travelled around Europe a bit but not much recently. I actually enjoy being out on the road rather than stuck in a data centre or our office in London. I'm only usually away for a few days at a time so does not affect my family too much.

I'm a Cameraman and the job always has me working away from home. Recently it's been taking me abroad a lot (I'm actually writing this from Hvar, Croatia whilst doing a research film out here). It's one of the things I wanted to get out of the job. But - as little a right as I have to moan about it, because it's a great thing - you're right, it can get difficult at times.

I think one thing it's done is help me appreciate what I have back at home, the friends and family I'm so used to being flaky with half the time. When you're stuck in a lifeless village with nothing to do (like now), it's great to get a bit of "home" back through an email or phone conversation.

The danger for me is enjoying the "escape" too much! It's always a shock to the system having to come back and sort out regular life rubbish, after focusing on something completely new, in a new place for a couple of months.

Yep.

Past 2 years have been 3+ months a year in the US (Denver, CO and Des Moines, IA) as well as a couple of sales gigs in Europe.

This year has been the year of Asia, did a month in China in September. Next year I'm off to India (Bangalore) in Q1 for a month.

One of the few good things I enjoy about my job!

Occasionally. I don't really like doing it but it's what I signed up to. I've been sent to some nice parts of the world on occasion though - the problem is they always seem to send me away when it's really inconvenient. :/

Skene House Whitehall, nicer than a hotel as I have seperate bed room, sitting room, etc - mini flat basically. Also get my own little kitchen so I can cook food myself rather than being sat in a restaurant on my own - that really does get boring very quickly.

Right round the corner from me! I pass there everyday on my way to work, looks like a nice set up. You ever go to the queen vic pub?

Yup, I'm currently here for another 5weeks, been her for 2 already.

Yeah it is a pretty nice set up :). No I haven't been to the Queen Vic, I'm new to Aberdeen to be honest - only about my 4th week up here!

*Hopefully* going to move in with a mate in the New Year once he's finished a project in Cameroon and moves back into his flat up here.

Do you get any more for being away over xmas/new year or is it just the same as normal?
