It is with great sadness that Del Rey Books and Random House report the passing of beloved author Anne McCaffrey. Anne McCaffrey was best known for her award-winning and immensely popular Dragonriders of Pern® novels. McCaffrey died at her home in Ireland on November 21st shortly after suffering a stroke. She was 85 years old. She is survived by her two sons and daughter. We will provide more information as we receive it from Anne’s family.

Such sad news, only recently read my first Dragonriders book (I know I know), and I'm pretty hooked, such a shame to hear of her passing..

Rest In Peace.

RIP :(

She's been one of my favourite authors for a very long time (with over two shelves of books on one of my bookcases to prove it).

Whilst I really enjoy the dragon books I also really like the brain ship and crystal singer ones as well.

I think my first 'real' exposure was the book "Nimisha's Ship" which I really enjoyed, I never really had much interest in the Dragonriders series, but last year was sent Dragonharper as an 'editors choice', and only got around to reading it a few months back.

I think my initial reaction reading the thread title sums up my feelings quite well, "ah hell" :(

I'm a great fan of her works, some of the earliest books I can remember reading* were her Crystal Singer series (recently reread and still enjoyed), and her "ship" series, with the Dragon books being probably her best, but the Tower and Hive were good books as well.

She was a very large part of my literary youth (and I still enjoy her books now), and it's very sad new to hear of her going

*Along with Harry Harrison's Deathworld series, and Asimov's Robot series.

Ah yes the Tower and the Hive ones were very good too.

I was just going to stuck into her novels as I heard some good stuff about the dragonrider ones.

Real shame. RIP

I'd really recommend them, it's probably best to start with Dragon Singer (I think it is), as that introduces you to most of the main characters and settings for later books, as well as chronologically being the first in the main sequence (IIRC Moreta and Dragonsdawn/Dragonkin are set earlier but Singer sets the scene).
