Just not fair - Dead Computer :(

With all my health issues and the fact i'm disabled, I was finally able at the end of october to have my own place. But sad as it maybe the only thing that keeps me going apart from my family is my computer. I feel happy, can do my pictures and play games with my friends.

Today though after only having the system for much less than a month, it's dead and I don't know why :(. I noticed last night while playing games it felt slower than usual and i was getting brrrrrrp sounds and hard lock ups while playing BF3. It was lag a little when opening and closing tabs in a browser and took ages to unpack files. It always passed prime before hand and intel burn test however..

Last night while listening to music and on OCUK, the system just shut itself off like I'd had a power cut. I pressed the power button, nothing!

Took the power lead out waited a few mins, put the power lead back in and the power light would flash on and off and the only thing that would move very slightly was a fan. Nothing else and if i try to power it again dead! . Take the cable out, wait put it back in same thing power light on comp comes on for a split second, case fan moves and nothing again.

I know it's just a computer but i was nearly in tears as so far this entire year nothing whatsoever has gone right and I can't go into it

Sounds like your PSU has blown. Luckily you'll still be under warranty so will be able to get a replacement or repair.

Give your retailer a call and begin the RMA process.

Oh, and hard luck :/

Really sorry to hear that, I know how you feel. Its stupid to get upset about things like this but at the same time it can really knock you for 6 :/

Afraid I havn't got anything useful to contribute on the 'getting it fixed' dept, hope you figure it out :)

+1. Could be any component if its not getting to POST. New PSU would be best bet though. Does anything smell inside the case? Fried RAM, blown cap on the board etc?

I feel for ya :(

Sounds like your 3D card might have gone faulty. The same thing happened to be a little while ago. Had to send it off to OCUK for a replacement. Had the exact same symptoms. The games I was playing a few days before kept crashing or freezing randomly for a few seconds. Then it just cut out completely and switched off. And wouldnt switch back on again, except for the fan whirring.

Do you have it under warrenty? If you've had it only a month it should have some form of coverage you can use for repair/replacement. Also try taking out the 3D card and switching it on then, to see if you can get it working that way. Would mean you couldnt play games for the moment, but at least you could use the internet and stuff.

I just had a blown psu and I feel your pain. I bought a new one while mine was off for RMA so my replacement psu will be up on mm in a day or 2 if you need one.

Do you have a multi meter handy or know someone who does? Can test your psu with that. If not, try removing everything besides RAM and CPU and listen for beeps. If you aren't even getting fans spinning up it looks to be psu or mobo. Easier to test psu though.

Thanks all :(

Craig doubtful it's the card as when i plug the power supply cable I press the power button and for less than three seconds the power LED light comes on and goes off. The fan doesn't whirr, it just well moves slightly probably to indicate it's just had a very short burst of power. If i try the power button again, nothing NO led NO fan movement. Completely dead!,

Wait 5mins plug power cable back in, Press power button the power led lights up flickers and goes off again. Fan moves once and that goes off, no whirrin

Devrij can't afford it, I took a hit even buying this as it has to be payed off monthly :(

No bad smells whatsoever, apart from my own ;)

Ah yes. Sorry I misread your OP. Thought you said the fan was the only thing still going. :o

Would be better in the hardware forum like with Movingtables' post, but yes it does sound like the PSU if the base unit's refusing to turn back on. Hopefully it's an OcUK machine as their tech support is pretty good.

When my pc dies it gets me realy upset as well. As i spend all day fixing pcs, the last thing i want when i get home is problems with my pc.

Could try taking most of the things out, just leave the ram and cpu in the mb and refit the psu cables and see if it powers on, reset cmos with jumper and see if it powers on. if it powers on plug in graphics card and see if it works. At least then you can narrow it down. if it fails to power on, then it could be psu or cpu/mb. Probably my least favourite type of pc problem because without additional components to test you never realy know what is wrong.

Easiest thing to do is just unplug the atx cable from your mobo, jump start your PSU with a paperclip and see if it'll power a fan off a molex connector. If not, bad PSU.

could still be the card mine did that with a faulty card but most likely psu or mobo

try a different card in first
try s spare psu if have one

then just try basic as possible to see if can get to route of it.

or just send back rma

Is it a prebuild, or one you built yourself?
Built myself using all of ocuk parts..

I took the computer upstairs at my family home now, plugged the power cord in turned it on with one memory stick in, no hd, no cdrw and no fans apart from the rear fan and cpu. I saw every led light on the motherboard, the power light come on for what was a fraction of a second, the fan moves slightly and thats it, dead again. Press the power button nothing, totaly dead.

Go for this one. Always the best bet for working out whether it's the PSU or not. Unfortunately stuff like this happens, but at least once you diagnose it, you should be able to sort it out quite easily.

Alternatively got any forum members nearby to you who can swap parts over if needs be?
