Why do people 'crack' their knuckles?

I do it when I'm about to punch someone.

And by punch someone I mean sit down at my computer and get my uber micro on.

I do crack my back, neck and arms too during the morning stretches, feels brilliant, like as if a lot of pressure has been relieved, like letting a large fart out or dropping a massive deuce.

I do it occaisionally when the joints get uncomfortable - it relieves the pressure and feels good. I don't go out of my way to do it all the time, just when I feel it needs doing.

Neither do I, but people who crack there fingers and knuckles :\ It can hardly be good for your joints in the long run?

There are no negative effects of cracking ones joints. It's a long running myth probably invented by some mothers who didn't like the sound of it at the dinner table when their sons did it before noshing away at the steak or whatever.

Both of my thumbs get 'stuck' sometimes and I have to give them a bit of a crack.

Also, I had an accident involving a steak knife and one of my fingers and sometimes that finger needs cracking too.

The rest of my fingers are fine though...

Honestly, first thing I do when I wake up an have sat up is click my knuckles, back ad neck :D

Feels good brah.

One of my colleagues hates it and AFAIK it does nothing bad.

It's called cavitation.

Cavitation is the formation and then immediate implosion of cavities in a liquid – i.e. small liquid-free zones ("bubbles") – that are the consequence of forces acting upon the liquid.[1] It usually occurs when a liquid is subjected to rapid changes of pressure that cause the formation of cavities where the pressure is relatively low.

I would rather anyone knuckled their crack. I honestly think publicly cracking knuckled / back etc is vile beyond belief. Sends shivers up my spine.

sometimes you literally cannot do anything but crack knuckles/wrist/elbow, the joint can get very stiff and the only way to loosen it is by cracking it, my wrist/thumb and elbow get like it since I was in a motorbike accident, I dont particularly like the sound but don't really have a choice!

I do it with my thumbs as they feel 'stuck' until I crack them and then they are ok.
I can also do it with my knees if I bend them and sink down, that tends to freak people out!

I do it, but just as when I stretch to exercise (there's a lot of clicking) it's a release.
Many Tai chi moves cause this too.

As a chiropractor once said, "I'm addicted to crack".
