And as promised, the lav with reactive armour,

Looks like it ran through a scrapyard and came out with those stuck to it.

thats slat armour - best thing they ever put on our trucks / tanks in afghan to stop RPG's

Doesn't do too good against tv missiles :( 100% to 39% in 1 hit. Heli's are bad enough with the gunner and pilot spamming the gun and missiles onto vehicles, with the tv missile and the pilot lobbing rockets tanks are gonna have a very short life expectancy.

Does Smogsy's server have voice enabled or mumble?, can help but think I'd be more use if I knew what was going on! If so how do I set it up?

As above... the armour shown on the lav is not reactive. Reactive Armour is normally tile based armour that 'explodes' when hit to dissapate the energy of the incoming hit. (It's slate armour as mentioned).

Read about RPG's on Wikipedia for example... and you will get to everything about RPG weapons and the armour used to defend against it.

Finally got that flippin' SOFLAM or whatever it is lol.. took me ages trying to get enough points with a recon guy. Trouble is, with the very limited damage that Javelins do... not really sure it's worth it! (Especially since no one bothers to use jav's at present).

What if I'd also had an engineer, surely the fight would have gone on forever?

I enjoy watching a tank battle like the one you are suggesting. I have helped out many a teammate, waiting in the wings for the enemy engineer to get out to repair and then i swoop, no more engineer. Even guys crawling right behind the tank repairing as the the tank moves. Too easy sometimes.
Havent quite had the guts to run up and knife them while they are repairing yet tho. One for the future i think :)
Would be nice to get an assist if you kill the guy repairing the vehicle, which in turn causes the vehicle to be easily finished off.

Its actually real though.

Look at the armour that armoured vehicles in afghanistan are wearing :

Idea behind it is that taliban RPGs that are fired at the vehicle, detonate when they touch the grills, not when they touch the armour. The extra foot or so clearance they get, means the vehicles usually survive without blowing open and injuring those inside.

I think its really cool how the reactive armour changes the external appearance like that.

Meh, it matters not that its technically not "reactive armour" and more "enhanced armour"

Still cool how it changes the external appearance when applied, even if the game mis names it (the unlock that achieves that look is called reactive armour)

I agree. I've lost several battles with tanks because even though I'm more accurate than my adversary, and putting more rounds on target, they've got an engineer in the back repairing faster than I can do damage.

Did no one test this out in development and think about the gameplay consequences? What if I'd also had an engineer, surely the fight would have gone on forever?

This has been a game mechanic since BF2. Nothing wrong with it.

For the record, the engineers repair tool does run out after about 15 seconds of constant repairing. It then won't work for another 15 seconds or so before it "reloads"

Even with 2 engineers at the back it would never go on "forever"

The ingame description says that the armor becomes damaged in the process. I originally thought this meant one hit from an RPG lost you the armor so didn't bother to use it. Does it actually mean that the individual pieces become damaged meaning you can take numerous directional hits from several RPGs?

Yes

Reactive armour beefs up your side and rear armour so you can take as many hits from the rear, as you can on the front.

The armour does get destroyed though. So if you enter a battle with a tank, and take 3 shots to the rear, your rear armour will be gone.

You will have won the fight, but if you meet another tank your rear armour is back to normal so you can only stand 2 hits.

Don't want to nitpick and not saying what you were overal saying wasn't true, though the repair tool time out is nothing like "15 seconds or so" more like 4 or 5 seconds max.

but does it mean if you lose the rear armor you still have the front? or is it 'one' piece

It may have been in since BF2 (not that I ever remember it happening then), but that doesn't mean I think it's good. I appreciate being able to repair damaged tanks, but being able to do it to the extent that they are basically invulnerable for the duration of a firefight is stilll rather silly.

All servers have voice comm but you need to be in a battlelog party at the moment to use it.....

i do have a mumble but most use UKCS or OCUK mumble if you google the word OCUK mumble you will find the page with details :)

you can come on ukcs one to both mumbles are fun and full of teamwork

I tried flying with joystick and also with m+k and OMG the mouse allows much tighter turning circle  That has to be fixed! Surely flying should be the domain of joystick users , no fun doing it with m+k imo.

Repair time is far to quick, nerf the time it takes to repair things. The repair rate of one player repairing now in BF3 is equivalent to three engineers repairing in BF2.

I think the repair tool should only be able to restore a maximum of X points before a recharge.

It should be able to restore a maximum of 50% before a 5 second cool down.

AGree. With 2 engineers repairing a tank, it is neigh on impossible to take it out. Hell even with 1 engineer you can survive about 10 hits before the cooldown time catches up on him and he can't keep the tank alive.
