*****Official Star Wars: The Old Republic Thread*****

It's got it's good points, but so far isn't living upto the hypometer!

The voice acting is nice, and I can't believe other MMO's haven't done it.. but I guess it boils down to expense, and a deliverable game.. as this game ages if they keep up the voice acting/cinematics it's going to grow to HUUUUGE proportions... previously that'd have been almost impossible for customers to keep up with in terms of downloads.

That aside, and the Star Wars chic... it's all a bit 'meh' the graphics are really average imo, from lots of previous screenshots I wasn't expecting much.. but damn is it really 2012 nearly? I'd put the graphics on a par with LoTRO but with an added dose of blurry.. Everything just seems so wishy washy.. particularly the terrain and textures.

The story telling is nice, but the quests so far appear to be standard MMO fodder.. take this Uber-Ujamaflip to Sith Lord Hardnuts, and on the way kill 10 Womp-Rats!

Obviously there's a long way to go in the gaming story... but so far it feels like a solo 3rd person adventure..

Think I'll be sticking with Rift for a while...

To be honest unless the MMO is set purely in space like Eve then it's doomed to be a "wow clone". Although if purely set in space it'd be deemed an Eve clone, so you can't win either way.

Personally i find it incredibly insulting to say its WoW with a different storyline.

Its completely different to WoW.

It's the same overall model as WoW, but other than that I agree it's quite different.

Graphically, it has a totally different art style.

The quests are more polished, have more depth to them and are generally more refined.

The general combat mechanics are quite different.

I think the default interface is better, but WoW is still the best if you know what you are doing with addons.

People are simply expecting too much if they thought it was going to be a totally different type of game to WoW, RPG's and MMORPG's all follow the same standards really. I think Bioware have done more than enough to differentiate it from WoW.

People complaining that it's very similar to WoW probably shouldn't bother with MMORPG's in general, because WoW is the benchmark and most (if not all) future games are going to be based on that sort of game style.

(Btw Latex, have you got a spare account still? I sent you an email.)

Well, started off with a consular, and after a few hours I was really bored with the whole thing. It was bland, generic and just wasn't dragging me in at all. I kept wondering when I was supposed to start having fun.

Then I rolled an agent, and suddenly it was 2:00am and I couldn't keep my head up any longer. It was like a different game - voice acting was brilliant, quests genuinely interesting, and Nal Hutta incredibly well done. I think jedi are just intrinsically boring :D

The only thing that bugs me about the game is the huge, intrusive UI. It needs at the very least to be scalable, it just gets in the way at the moment.

I see Swtor now has its own section on the OcUK Mumble(We were using General Discussion previously) so when servers come back up does anybody fancy going on it and perhaps rolling on the same server? Always easier and funnier to do quests etc. when in a group.

And in Rift you never have to kill 10 pigs, collect 15 shards..

I don't understand when people say its the same as any other mmo??

Spent last night playing, got my jedi knight upto 10 and really enjoyed it. Grouped with a mate and the shared conversations were great.

Very impressed, also don't care about fancy graphics I like the style and its the game I enjoy.

And where exactly did I say that I didn't do that in Rift?

Simple concept really... other than voice acting, (so far, from what I've experienced) they've not done anything different to any other MMO imo. There see, not hard to understand at all ;)
Although I should point out I never did actually say it's the same as any other MMO... I just said the questing was standard MMO fodder; which it is!

Yeah it isn't wow, can't say I've had a wow like experience yet. Agree about graphics, turn off bloom to remove the blur. Was expecting sharper but getting into my consular now.

You complain about Swtor's quests being generic and then go off to play Rift, well known for having the most generic and boring quests around. Swtor's questing is the same as most others(Collect x amount y etc.) however with voice overs they make it more interesting and you don't really realise so it is fun.

I think the graphics are good especially as it is not a game that boasts about how amazing its graphics are(Aion for example). It's not the next Crysis but the graphics are better than many MMOs.

Definitely going to play a BH over a Imperial Agent at launch, I found the cover system really annoying.

Whoa there nelly!... you can climb down of that high horse of fandom; and I'll point you to my last post.

But to re-itterate, I didn't complain.. I made an observation that it's quests are as generic as any other MMO out there (Rift included)...

Was playing a couple of characters on North American servers last night, surprisingly completely lag free. Went for dinner and came back on to a (what was supposed to be 3 hour wait) but was back in, in 20 minutes.

Enjoying the game so far, have yet to group up so not done any instances.

Aren't they all though? don't think I've came across any MMO that doesn't have quests that involve "Kill 10 X's" or "Collect 10 Y's" or "Take this item here to here". Even EVE which I'd consider the only unique MMO currently in existence has these. They are your basic filler/no thought required quests.

I played on a US server too for a while, due to the solitary English PVE server at launch.. oddly I found that I had a better 'experience' on the US server with respect to 'playability'... not sure if there's some different hardware at play or not; but I'd have thought that unlikely..
